Problems
•Scientific and clinical knowledge in orthopedic
has inceased rapidly
•Departments (esspecially small) are sometimes
overwhelmed by their educational tasks
• Teaching of clinical skills is established in the
departments
•Knowledge over the whole field is not provided
(except Universities) and the educational process
of knowledge is not standardised
•International Certification within the EU is still
a problem
•The postgraduate education of the residency
does not include an academic degree (like MBA)
•All MD are the same, which does not reflect
specialisation in an academic postgraduate
degree
Educational system within the EU
•An EU harmonisation programe in educational
activities is already in place: Bologna process
•Bologna convention includes Bachelor and
Master degrees and PhD programes
•Postgraduate programes can be established
accordingly
•Educational programes are standardised in
ECTS units
•International certification can be achived
through accreditation institutions (FIBA)
Problems
•National problems in health care are specific,
postgraduate education on a centralized EU level
can not address those
•Centralised exams are probably not the solution
of the problem (language, knowledge, aims,…)
•Standardized educational systems according to
postgraduate educational degrees can be a
solution
•Why not use the educational system of the EU
on the university level to harmonise postgraduate
programes ?

Future developments
•More than 30 Universities already have
established a Master Degree in Orthopedic
Surgery parallel to the residency programe
•Postgraduate education has to meet the Bologna
criteria for international certification
•Specialists in orthopedic surgery should have an
aknowowledged educational value
•This degree could be the basis of an harmonized
and standardized programe in the EU
•The regulations concerning this educational
programe are already inplace
• The UEMS has all possibilities to establish
such a programe EU wide.
