Any qualifications accredited by Ofqual and approved under Section 96 for pre-16 teaching can still be offered by schools, but will not count in performance tables.” Sir Michael Wilshaw, new Head of Ofsted, speaking before the Education Select Committee the other week: ”In terms of the Wolf Review, it is saying that there should be a balance between vocational education and a focus on core subjects: English and Maths. I have a different view from Alison Wolf on that balance and the ratio. She is suggesting 20% for vocational studies, 80% for core. I think it should be more like 40:60-40% for vocational, 60% for core-because you cannot do anything worthwhile, it seems to me, in 20%: something that is really practical and combines good practical stuff with the theoretical stuff. I would disagree with that balance.” © CITY & GUILDS Hair and Beauty Qualifications Qualifications not on the list • Regardless of whether a qualification is included in headline performance table measures, in future the general rule will be that all qualifications regulated by Ofqual will be approved on Section 96 to be funded for teaching, subject to minimal checks that they are not inappropriate for 14-16 year olds. • There may be students for whom qualifications not included in the list for headline measures are the most appropriate ones for them. Where it is in a student's best interest, schools are encouraged to teach qualifications not included on the list. © CITY & GUILDS WORK READY Equipping learners with the skills for getting into work City & Guilds Functional Skills EMPLOYABILITY AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT(7546) Ofqual has now approved 39 new 7546 qualification pathways.
