Essential Question: How do you
solve multi-step equations?
1
How do I solve a multi-step equation?
• Use distributive property and/or combine like
terms.
• Use inverse operations to remove the constant
term.
• Use inverse operations to remove the
coefficient.
2
What about word problems?
• Any time you are given a word problem, we
want to translate the words into mathematical
symbols and operations.
• Once we have written an equation we can
solve it.

Exercising You are participating in a 15 mile walk-athon. You walk and run for the same amount of time.
You walk at a rate of 4 miles per hour, and you run at a
rate of 6 miles per hour. How many hours will it take
you to complete the walk-a-thon?
4
Science For a science fair, you perform an experiment
to see how the number of Venus flytrap seeds planted in

cups for each seed amount. You have 75 seeds. How
many cups do you need?
5

Volunteering You volunteered at a senior citizen’s
center for 9 hours last month and 14 hours this month.
How many hours do you need to volunteer next month
so your monthly mean is 10 hours?

enough money saved?
10
Fundraiser Tickets to a fund-raiser are $14 if
purchased ahead of time and $25 if purchased at the
door. The total amount raised from both ticket sales was
$625. If 11 tickets were purchased at the door, how
many tickets were purchased ahead of time?
11
How do you solve multi-step equations?
