SB 866
 requires TEA to develop a plan for integrating technology
into the classroom to help accommodate students with
dyslexia and provide the plan and information about the
availability and benefits of the identified technologies to
school districts

Bullying Prevention
HB 1942
 requires the State Board of Education to adopt TEKS for the
health curriculum, in consultation with the Texas School
Safety Center, that include evidence-based practices that
will effectively address awareness, prevention,
identification, self-defense in response to, and resolution
of and intervention in bullying and harassment

Kindergarten
The student understands that bullying behaviors result in
unhealthy conditions throughout the life span. The student is
expected to:
(A) identify bullying behaviors
(B) identify replacement behaviors to avoid bullying friends,
family members, and peers
(C) demonstrate how to get help from a teacher, parent, or
trusted adult in solving problems and conflicts with peers

behavior;
(C) explain the difference between assertive behavior and
aggressive behavior;

tattling.

(12)(B) identify strategies for prevention and intervention of
all forms of bullying such as emotional, physical,
social, and sexual;

Alcohol Awareness
SB 1344

Proclamation 2014
• Instructional materials for K-12 Science, K-8 Math, and
Technology Applications
• Nominations are due on or before Friday, February 15, 2013.
• The nomination form is posted on the TEA website at

PAEMST
The National Science Foundation, under the direction of the White House,
approves the Texas candidates as finalists for the national Presidential Awards
for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST) award. If chosen as a
national winner, the state finalists will receive $10,000 and an all-expense-paid
trip for two to Washington D.C. for ceremonies that include recognition from
the President of the United States.
• Texas had a record number of applicants in 2012;
we hope to exceed that record in 2013.
• Nominate your grade 7 – 12 math and science
teachers at www.paemst.org.
• Encourage them to begin their applications right
away.
PAEMST Selection Committee
• TEA is looking for experts in the fields of math and science
education to review and evaluate PAEMST applications and
choose our 2013 Texas Finalists.
• Encourage your experienced math and science teachers and
administrators to apply to serve on the Texas PAEMST Selection
Committee. The application and additional information are

2013 National Youth Science Camp
The National Youth Science Camp is an all-expense-paid residential summer
program that offers educational forums and recreational activities that
encourage the development of thoughtful scientific leadership. Two students
are selected to represent each state. The application deadline is February 26,
2013. Information is available at 2013 NYSC Application Packet.
Eligibility Requirements
• Must be candidates for high school graduation between July 1, 2012, and
June 30, 2013
• Must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in
mathematics and/or the sciences
• Must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity
through involvement in both school and community activities
• Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and
outside the realm of academic pursuits
• Must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied
topics
