MULTICULTURALISM
Multiculturalism in Canada is an idea that promotes the acceptance and celebration of its
diverse races, religions and cultures. The Canadian government supports multiculturalism by
recognizing the social importance of immigration.
The roots of multiculturalism in Canada can be seen in the country’s earliest beginnings, as
three founding cultures — Aboriginal, British and French — were soon joined by many more
from around the globe.
Today, most Canadians are proud of multiculturalism.Yet it is an ongoing struggle to fight
against racism and anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as for the rights of Aboriginal people.
Promoting multiculturalism is tied to promoting anti-racism and diversity.
