How would you like to
vacation with me on that
island? I can get us a great
deal! The only thing we
need to do is to earn
some money, are you
ready to get started?
I am so glad you said yes! Now the issue of
money, the only way for us to earn money is to
challenge some of my old friends to some math
problems. There are three opportunities to
earn money per opponent. Please take your
time and double check your work so that we
can earn enough money for both of us to go on
vacation!
Meet the competition
Here comes our
first challenger!
Weighing in a 3
pounds 4 ounces…
Round 1- Simplify:
2
2
(5x + 2x -3) + (2x – x + 4)
Check your work
Answer:
2
7x + x +1
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!
Daffy gave you $100 for getting that
question correct.
Remember when adding
polynomials there are a few things
to remember:
1. The parenthesis don’t mean
anything
2. Combine ‘like terms’ (terms
with matching variables)
Round 2
Round 2- Simplify:
(3x + y – 5) – (4x – 6)
Check your work
Answer:
-x + y + 1
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!
Daffy gave you $200 for getting that
question correct.

Round 3
Round 3- Simplify:
(7x – 5) (x – 6)
Check your work
Answer:
7x2 – 47x + 30
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!
Daffy gave you $300 for getting that
question correct.

Here comes our
next challenger!
Weighing in a 45
pounds 6 ounces…
Round 1- Simplify:
2
(7x – 5)
Check your work
Answer:
49x2 - 70x + 25
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!

Round 2- Factor:
2
x +x
Check your work
Answer:
x(x + 1)
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!
Sam gave you $300 for getting that
question correct.
Remember to always
look for a GCF first!
Sometimes it is all
you can do.
Round 3- Factor:
2
3x + 6x – 24
Check your work
Answer:
3(x + 4)(x - 2)
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!
Sam gave you $400 for getting that
question correct.
Remember to always
look for a GCF first!
Next you want to factor
what is inside the
parenthesis!
Here comes our
next challenger!
Weighing in a 103
pounds 2 ounces…
Round 1- Factor
2
(x + 8x – 33)
Check your work
Answer:
(x + 11)(x – 3)
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!
Hazel gave you $300 for getting that
question correct.
Remember when factoring trinomials there are a
few things to remember:
1. Every time you see three terms you should be
using the X chart
2. In the top of the X chart goes the first number
times the last and the bottom is the middle
3. “Two numbers that multiply to give you the
top and add to give you the bottom”
Round 2
Round 2- Factor
2
(x – 10x + 25)
Check your work
Answer:
2
(x – 5)
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes
Congratulations!!

write it as squared
Round 3
Round 3- Factor
2
49x – 121
Check your work
Answer:
(7x + 11)(7x – 11)
Did you get the
correct answer?
No
Yes

Hazel gave you $500 for getting that
question correct.
With a binomial there are a few things to
remember:
1. Always check for a GCF
2. When you have two terms check to see if you
can do DOTS
3. Verify that you have subtraction and that each
part is a perfect square
4. Two sets of parenthesis one plus and one
minus

Marvin gave you $500 for getting
that question correct.
Remember when factoring polynomials with
more than three terms you are factoring by
grouping:
1. Pull out a GCF FIRST!!
2. Pair the terms
3. Pull out a GCF from each pair
4. Once you have a common set of parenthesis
you can write your answer
