TechTrends Article - March/April 2012
A study on the attitudes of physical education
and sport students and pre-teachers toward
information, communication, and technology
(ICT)
337 students/teachers from Balikesir University
Integration of technology into the school
curriculum is complex and challenging (Cooper, 1998)
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Basic ICT Information:
1. New technologies used in every field of
education
2. Computers help students overcome
disadvantages
3. Computers provide fast and permanent
learning using sound & animation
4. The Internet provides access to and sharing of
information
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Global research findings:
Incorporating ICTs in education has become
important to developed and developing countries
(Li, Kirkup, 2007)
Internet connections in schools:
40% in 2005 (World Bank)
68% in 2006 (SPO, 2008)
Integration of technology into the school
curriculum is complex and challenging (Cooper, 1998)
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Global research findings:
Successful integration of computers into schools
depends on teachers’ and students’ attitudes
toward ICTs
Other factors:
Knowledge level of teachers about ICTs
Demographics – age, gender, years of
teaching experience
Teachers’ experience with ICTs
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Factors guiding research study:
1. The number of global studies on attitudes of
physical education and sports teachers toward
ICTs is limited
2. ICTs are becoming more important in PE and
sport science
3. ICTs are an integral part of PE curriculum and
the daily work of teachers, coaches, and sport
managers
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Study research questions:
1. What are the attitudes of PE, sports students,
and pre-teachers?
2. Is there a relationship between the attitudes
and the variables of age, gender,
departments, computer familiarity, instruction,
and frequency of computer use and computer
ownership?
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Study Findings:
1. ICTs are increasingly important in PE and
sport science
2. ICTs are an integral part of PE curriculum
3. ICTs are important in the daily work of
teachers, coaches, and sport managers
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Study Conclusions:
1. Physical education and sport students have
mainly positive attitudes toward computers
2. Age does not have a significant affect on
attitudes, but gender does
3. Males believe more strongly computers will
change their way of learning
4.Computer experience in years makes use
easier & learning better
The Attitudes of PE and
Sport Students Toward ICTs
Study Conclusions:
5. Students who received computer instruction:
Feel more comfortable using computers
Feel less stress
Believe that the computer is a valuable
learning tool and it can improve thinking &
conceptual skills
Further studies are needed in the same area using different samples
so that more valid and reliable conclusions may be drawn
