Metaphor for a Learning Map
The operative metaphor for learning maps is Google maps. The intent is for
visualization tools to allow a teacher, for example, to annotate the map with the
equivalent of “points of interest” and “travel directions” that highlight specific 1:

Personalized Learning
Just like Google Maps – Learning map visualization tools allow an educator,
for example, to annotate the map with the equivalent of “points of interest”
and “travel directions” that highlight:
• learning objectives,
• resources,
• learning standards,
• curriculum elements,
• student data,
• opportunities to earn digital
badges or credentials, and
• pathways relevant to a
lesson plan or a student’s
individual learning plan.
Technical and Employability
Learning Standards
To create effective learning maps for Career Cluster pathways,
employability and technical learning standards need to be identified
and setup to be online and in a machine readable format.
•
The Common Core Standards are already available online and in a
machine readable format. However, these standards only cover
Mathematics and English.
•
The Next Generation Science Standards are soon to be released in an
online machine readable format.
•
All other learning standards for Career Clusters are currently not setup in
an online, machine readable format.

Scenarios
A student is exploring IT careers
and wants to see the courses they
would have to take.
The Manufacturing STEM Learning
Exchange wants more schools to
use an updated course sequence
and resources that lead to
successful CNC certification testing
as early as senior year of high
school but with options to go
through college.
A new teacher is looking for the
most effective lessons and
resources mapped to Energy and
R & D Pathways.

How STEM Learning Exchanges Can
Participate with Learning Maps
 Work with ISLE, STEM Exchange partners, and others to create
default/recommended learning maps for each Career Cluster.
 Identify the employability and technical learning standards applicable
to Career Cluster learning maps.
 Engage the organizations providing national standards in a process to
setup standards online and in machine readable formats.
