

1837: Panic of 1837. People begin to panic and
exchange their paper money for gold and silver.
Banks run out of money and go out of business.
90% of all businesses fail in the east.
 Known as “Martin Van Ruin” – blamed for the
recession. Although it was Jackson who
destroyed the Bank of the US.
 Unable to run a second term.


1841: tries to run for re-election but
loses.
 Tries to run for President in 1844 but is
defeated.
 1848: Tries to run for President again,
but failed.
 1855: retires in Kinderhook, New York
 July 24, 1862: Dies of natural causes,
brought on by asthma.

