24 HOUR FORECAST
1. Sheen break up
allows for greater
natural dispersion.
2. Loop Current
disruption continues
to carry bulk of
offshore oil to N / NW.

J2 - Situation Update
• Trajectories of
observed oil suggest
some sheens will
continue to be caught
up in the
counterclockwise
eddy.
• A smaller portion
may move into the
Loop Current and
persist as widely
scattered tarballs.

J2 - Situation Update
LOOP CURRENT
• Recent modeling
reveals a shift in the
Loop Current which
could significantly
reduce the amount of
oil forecasted to reach
Florida.
• It is less likely oil
presently in Loop
Current will make it to
the FL west coast
unless a strong
tropical weather
system emerges in
the Gulf pushing
surface oil east.
• Keys could still
experience tar balls in
the next week.

SIMOPs
DEEP WATER HORIZON
J2 - Situation Update
• Conditions remain
favorable for SIMOPS
next 72 hours.
• Top Kill procedure to
be executed today.
Results of
effectiveness will not
be immediately
known.
• Involves reconfiguring
existing wellhead
equipment to provide a
conduit for pumping
heavy fluids into the well.
• Intent is to stop flow and
allow for a permanent
seal.
• Method has proven
successful on land; has
never been tried in deep
water.
• Riser Insertion Tube
Tool (RITT) removed
to make room for Top
Kill procedure.
• Other SIMOP activity
will continue as
weather conditions
permit.
• RITT, Top Hat remain
available for reuse.
