Fuses in ABB - General Presentation
HV Current Limiting Fuses
1) Back-up fuses
Fuses capable of breaking, under specified conditions of use and behavior, all currents
from the rated maximum breaking current down to the rated minimum breaking
current.
Suitable for application in switch/fuse combinations.
2) General purpose fuse
Fuses capable of breaking, under specified conditions of use and behavior, all currents
from the rated maximum breaking current down to the current that causes melting
of the fuse element in 1 hour or more.
ABB PTMV Poland
3) Full range fuse
Fuses capable of breaking, under specified conditions of use and behavior, all currents
that causes melting of the fuse element (s) up to its rated maximum breaking current.

HV Non-Current Limiting Fuses
1Expulsion fuses
Outdoor fuses for protection of overhead lines and distribution transformers. They
comprise a tin or copper fuse element in series with a flexible braid in a tube.
ABB PTMV Poland
2) Liquid fuses
Based on early non-current limiting fuses that use liquids ( mostly hydrocarbon)
to quench the arc.
