
 Iambic pentameter—a pattern of five metric feet with
an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable
(this results in ten-syllable lines).
 Octave—Eight-line stanza
 Sestet—Six-line stanza
Petrarchan/Italian Sonnet

 The octave poses a question or presents an idea; the
final sestet answers the question or restates the idea
more forcefully
 Sonnets are written in iambic pentameter.
 Follows an ABBAABBA CDCDCD rhyme scheme or
an ABBAABBA CDECDE rhyme scheme.
