What is a data center?
The data center is a physical
place that houses a network's
most critical systems, including
backup power supplies, fire
protection systems, air
conditioning, and security.
The Challenge
Data Centers, Network Closets, Remote Office and Cloud
Computing applications are inefficient, expensive to build
and operate, and don’t scale well to match business and
infrastructure needs.
∙
∙
∙
∙
Huge construction costs (Up to $1,300/sq ft)
Long time to build (up to 24 months)
Have to build the whole thing up front and hope IT catches up
Inefficient = high cost to operate
5
Mechanical Aspects of Today’s Data Centers
6
Why Containerized Systems?
∙
Connect the “Facility” (building shell) together with the complete
package for the best possible efficiency.
∙
Reduce starting costs and operational expenses.
∙
Create a standardized platform that can adjust to the rapidly changing
information technology environment.

How does EMS Resolve the Problem: EMS enclosures are flexible and perfectly scalable
Value Proposition:
Capital Expense reduction
•
Lower costs vs. traditional
data center deployments
•
Lower costs vs.
modular/container

Critical IT Facility Issues
Critical Problem 2
Problem: Limited Energy and highly inefficient cooling in data center
Effect of Problem: Data Centers running out of power due to so much power allocated to
cooling the IT equipment
How do you Resolve the Problem: Cool equipment within the enclosure rather than the entire
facility
Value Proposition:
Operating expense reduction
•
Efficiency demonstrated in cooling “only the
equipment” vs the entire room achieves up to 75%
reduction in electricity costs.
•
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) as low as 1.1
(typical PUE for a standard data center is 2.0,
meaning that for every watt of power delivered to
the IT equipment, an additional watt is used to
support the equipment from an electrical and
cooling perspective)
•
RASER HD allows for “high temp” water cooling,
removing water chillers from the OPEX equation.
=
Would you take the milk out of your refrigerator and cool
your whole house to keep the milk cold?

21
Critical IT Facility Issues
Critical Problem 3
Problem: Space constraints / Lack of flexible space to deploy IT
Effect of Problem: Computing requirements outrun facility physical capacity, limited
options relative to where IT is deployed
How do you Resolve the Problem: EMS enclosures reduce the data center footprint by 75% and
offer the ultimate flexibility in where IT is deployed.
Value Proposition:
Footprint Optimization
•
Due to the ability to deploy
higher density equipment,
significant floor space
reduction can be achieved.
•
Due to the nature of the
hardened enclosures, IT can
be deployed in unimproved
spaces, even outside.
EDI Case Study Comparing a Traditional Data Center
Design to a Design Based on Elliptical Mobile Solutions’
R.A.S.ER. Micro-Modular Data Centers
Greater Flexibility in Use of Space
The EMS Cabinet offers a drop in place infrastructure that can be placed in any
environment. This allows flexibility in site with strict floor space limits and even allows the
client to implement this solution in less traditional spaces (boiler room, outdoor space, etc).
The traditional approach requires a finished space within reasonable distances of an
exterior wall or roof area where supporting mechanical equipment can be placed. The
development of the finished space would include basic improvements such as floors,
ceiling, walls, insulation, access, access control, grounding, lighting, and general power.

Example 1: Small Office Data Center
High growth company in need of a data center closet
ECOtality, Inc. is a leader in clean electric transportation and storage
technologies. ECOtality is the parent company of ECOtality North America,
Innergy Power Corporation, and Fuel Cell Store.
Challenges: Ecotality needed to build a data center closet to support the rapid growth
of the company.
Solution: The C3-S.P.E.A.R. allowed them to deploy a data center in one of their
manufacturing warehouse in under 8 weeks. The C3-S.P.E.A.R. also provided a “Clean
IT” solution consistent with the company’s mission.
Benefits: Rapid deployment; $120,000 capex savings by not converting valuable
office space into a data closet; scalability, and the ability to relocate the data center to
a new location as the company grows.

Example 2: Disaster Recovery
Medical Group in need of a relocatable disaster recovery solution
CVC is the largest provider of cardiovascular medicine in Arizona. Its state-of
the-art facilities offer sophisticated medical consultations and advanced
testing including vascular and cardiac ultrasound, surgical diagnostics,
nuclear cardiology, electrophysiology and sleep studies.
Challenges: The client was in need of a disaster recovery solution, but did not want to
use a hosting facility or build a data center closet in a separate location.
Data Center Retrofit Solution: The group purchased a C3-S.P.E.A.R. with a skid cart
bottom to house its IT equipment. Located in an empty room in one of its offices, the
enclosure can easily be relocated to a different location using a pallet jack.
Benefits: Rapid deployment in 8 weeks and under budget; drop in place architecture
which greatly reduced CapEx and OpEX costs; improved performance and simplified
implementation.
26
Example 3: Remote Office Support
Largest trial court in the United States in need of remote office support.
The Los Angeles County Superior Court is the largest trial court system in the
United States with 600 courtrooms and 50 courthouses. The Courts serve
9.5 million people throughout the 4,000 square mile county. About 100,000
people use the court system each day for traffic violations; family law and
probate matters; small claims; as well as civil, juvenile and criminal cases.
Challenges: Los Angeles County had a budget deficit with little money to spend while
needing remote data centers for their court system. A strained California power grid
provided constant problems to power and cool their existing data center. Additionally,
Los Angeles is located in one of the most disaster prone areas of the country, requiring
the court to have a disaster tolerant infrastructure.
Solution: The courts purchased six C3-S.P.E.A.R.s with Mission Critical Venting. This
allowed them to eliminate downtime while providing remote offices with a secure,
flexible infrastructure to protect their court records and data bases.
Benefits: Rapid deployment in 10 weeks; security,; scalability for long term growth;
mobility; and shock and vibration protection.

Example 4: Harsh Environment
Native American Tribe in need of a data center closet/mobile disaster
recovery solution. The Hopi are a Native American people who live on the
2.5M square foot Hopi Reservation in Northeastern, AZ. The Hopi
Headquarters are in Kykotsmovi, a remote area of Arizona, prone to severe
rain, floods, snow and ice.
Challenges: The Hopi Data Center often experienced IT downtime due to
frequent power outages, unreliable backup power generation, flooding during
monsoon season, and snow during the winter. The Hopis wanted to have the
ability to relocate their environment to their location in Flagstaff if necessary.
Data Center Retrofit Solution: The Tribe purchased 1 C3-S.P.E.A.R. And 1 C-S.P.E.A.R.
which provided it with a secure, reliable and flexible infrastructure to protect their
data bases. The mobility feature of the enclosure made it the most practical choice
as both can easily be relocated in the event of severe weather.
Benefits: Rapid deployment in 8 weeks and under budget; drop in place architecture
which greatly reduced CapEx and OpEX costs; improved performance and simplified
implementation.
28
Example 5: High Density Data Center Consolidation
White Sands Missile Range New Mexico
Challenges: Needed to build a data center to support High density Cisco UCS and EMC
without upgrading or modifying Legacy traditional raised floor. They are planning to
move in next 24 months and wanted to go GREEN at the same time.
Solution: The RASER DX allowed them to deploy a GREEN data center in under 8
weeks. The RASER DX can be moved into new facility without upgrading the new
building and not having to un-rack the IT equipment.
Benefits: Rapid deployment; $900,000 cap ex savings by not retro fitting current data
center, scalability, and the ability to relocate the data center to a new location as
planned.
