Energy Awareness

What is Demand Response?
• Mechanisms used to encourage consumers to reduce
electricity during times of peak demand; high wholesale
prices, or grid emergencies
– Customers temporarily shed or shift loads in response to a request made by
utility
– Useful in controlling overall energy procurement costs and avoiding
emergencies (blackouts)
– Different than energy efficiency measures
• Energy efficiency – customers find ways to do the same thing with less power
• DR – customers go above and beyond EE measures to temporarily curtail or shift
load to different times
