Satellite Broadband In An Increasingly
Ubiquitous Telecom Environment
Do We Still Need Satellites?

Changing Landscape
•
•
•
•
Economic climate - Investment still needed in intensive telecommunications projects
while operators and service providers are looking to reduce capex in tough economic
conditions
Undersea cables - Port landing—but distribution/last mile challenges remain further
inland. In emerging markets in CIS, ME and Africa, last mile costs and time required
are prohibitive
Broadband expectation - previously 256kbps was classified as broadband now we
are looking at 1Mbps as the norm in all developing markets. In ME, 30 Mbps is
available today for those with fibre to the home—what about countries without?
Subscriber demands:

Broadband Demand Drivers
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Open skies policy - Deregulation in most major markets.
Latent demand - Public sector and government support for
broadband.
Applications - YouTube, P2P, video streaming, etc
E-initiatives - E-Learning, E-Government, Medicine
Internet Explosion
VoIP on the rise
Remote office connectivity
Decrease in satellite CPE costs and pricing comparable to other
technologies

The main driver for change
•
In a frequency re-use
scheme, the same frequency
is re-used numerous times
over different geographical
areas
•
Frequency re-use increases
spectrum efficiency which
directly translates into
increased throughput
•
Ka-band allows for frequency
re-use on satellites because
of its high frequency
•
In the example shown, the
“Yellow” frequency is used 17
times
