
Be gathered
together, comrades,
for this is not the
time to sleep; by
Allah, every
comrade who sleeps
is not of the true
companions.
Stay together, friends.
Don’t scatter and
sleep.
Our friendship is made
Of being awake.


Whoever is not
turning about and
weeping after the
fashion of a
waterwheel shall not
see the face of the
garden, he will lose
the way to the
garden.
The waterwheel
accepts water
and turns and gives it
away,
weeping.


You who have
sought the heart's
desire in the world
of water and clay,
you are running
towards that river in
which there is no
water.
That way it stays in the
garden,
whereas another
roundness rolls
through a dry riverbed
looking
for what it thinks it
wants.


May my heart be
unapprised of where
the Beloved is, if my
heart is not
quivering like the
heart of quicksilver
for the love of Him.
Stay here, quivering
with each moment
like a drop of mercury.
