pronounced when continuing and dropped
when stopping or changed to an alif with a
stretch of 2 counts.

Degfinition of Idgham
‫ إدغام‬linguistically: It means merging.
Applied Definition: It means merging a
non-voweled letter with another voweled
letter so that the two letters become one
emphasized letter of the second type.
Letters of Idgham
‫يرملون‬
forming the word
Idgham occurs when one word ends with
‫التنوين‬
‫يرملون‬
‫النون الساكنة‬
or
and the immediate word after it begins with one of the
above letters.
The ‫الساكنة‬
letter.
‫إدغام‬
‫ النون‬or ‫ التنوين‬are then merged into the idgham
can only be applied between two words and not within
one word.

 do not pronounce ‫النون الساكنة‬
 pronounce the letter after it
 Stretch the ‫ غنة‬to the same
length as ‫ نون ُم َش ّددَ ة‬.

lengthened ‫غنة‬
If one of ‫ ينمو‬letters immediately follow
‫ التنوين‬in between two words:
 Do not pronounce ‫التنوين‬
 Pronounce the vowel (i.e. ُُ
instead of ٌ

 pronounce the letter after it
 Stretch the ‫ غنة‬to the same length
as ‫ نون ُم َش ّد َدة‬.

Types of Idgham: ‫ إدغام‬without
‫غنة‬
Its letters are:

If one of the letters (‫ ) ل ر‬immediately follow ‫النون‬
‫ الساكنة‬or ‫ التنوين‬in between two words:
 do not pronounce ‫ النون الساكنة‬or ‫التنوين‬
 pronounce the letter after it with a little
emphasise to indicate the presence of a shedda.
 No ghunnah!
