Current Process
Why are even Quark,
file sharing and e-mail
still non-collaborative?
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Current Process
Sharing with attachments is inefficient.
•
•
•
•
Attachments can be too large to send over email, and take up inbox space.
Coworkers with incompatible software can't even open your attachments.
It's easy to lose track of which version of an attachment you should work on.
Someone gets stuck reconciling everyone's asynchronous edits.
File shares can create workflow bottlenecks.
•
•
•
•
Everyone gets locked out of a file when one person forgets to check it back in.
Coworkers with incompatible software can't even open shared files.
Teams need IT support to set up new file shares.
It's difficult to browse or search across multiple file shares.

Current Process
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Current Process
• Process is non-collaborative from inception
• Changes are not-tracked
• Quark is the only collaborative platform
– Quark does not span entire organization
– Quark is a “Black Box”
– Quark is Edition-Centric
• Continued….
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Current Process
• Process relies on Desktop-Based Microsoft
Word
• Process relies on E-Mail
• Editing is back-loaded to the Quark
platform
• Quark does not interface with web

• Utilize a truly collaborative platform
• Eliminate need for E-Mail in publishing
process
• Track and archive all changes, all documents
• Front-Load editing ahead of Quark
• Edit within a story-driven environment
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process

What system costs nothing
that can do that?
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
The Google
Documents
Application Suite
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• Google Documents features all the
functionalities we need and none of the
functionalities we don’t need
• Employees can start a project with software
like Microsoft Office, and use Google Docs to
share files with coworkers for collaborative
editing
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• Everyone accesses the same online copy of
the file in Google Docs, so there are no
attachment compatibility problems, inbox
storage quota issues, or versions to reconcile
• When the group is done editing, the Editor
can push the content to Design to cut & paste
into Quark, and to Web Design to cut & paste
into the web CMS
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• Furthermore, within the Google Documents
Application Suite, the user is identified by their Email Address
• In other words, we can use Google Mail (Gmail) to
handle our @dailystar.com.lb e-mail at the same
time
• All cut & paste is handled with XML, meaning that
hyperlinks, formatting, etc., will carry over to the
web-version
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process

Advantages
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• It’s cheap (free actually)
• It allows us to easily front-load the Editing
process
• It allows for remote access to the system
• It virtually eliminates most IT problems
• It solves the Lotus Notes problem
• Continued…
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
•
•
•
•
It has an internal Wiki
We can keep using Quark 1
We can use a non-integrated web CMS
It’s really easy to use and is platform agnostic
(Mac, PC, etc)
• It makes collaboration a snap and encourages
revisions
• Continued…
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• It audits all revisions
• It automatically archives everything, with a
built in search-engine
• It is infinitely scalable
• It requires no new software
• Theoretically the only person who would need
a new computer is Mark
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
Disadvantages
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• After the content is edited, it needs to be cut
& pasted into Quark and the Web CMS, similar
to our current process
• However, content pasted from Google
Documents is xHTML, so formatting is
maintained

Future State:
Hardware
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State | Hardware
• It is highly recommended that the Daily Star
purchase Apple iMac’s for the Newsroom
• Each machine should
cost approximately
$1,200 and have
a desk-life of over
five years
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State | Hardware
• These machines will auto-network to each
other, will have an internal instant messaging
and file-sharing, and automatically find the
networked drives and network printer
• They will not suffer from virus’s, spyware
• They have auto-backup features built-in
• Integrated network communication and file
sharing guards against internet-breakage

• Features:
• Typographical niceties — WordPress uses the Texturize engine
to intelligently convert plain ASCII into typographically correct XHTML entities. This
includes quotes, apostrophes, ellipses, em and en dashes, multiplication symbols,
and ampersands.
• Intelligent text formatting
• Multiple authors
• WordPress supports pinging Ping-O-Matic, which means

Concept
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• Upload/Download
– Chiefly, what is necessary is a website
that is capable of flexing and scaling to the content development
requirements of the day, week, month and year.
– Data must move freely from the journalist through the editors and to
the website. Conversely, data must move freely from the internet to
the journalists in an aggregated format.
– With modern tools on-line, it is not necessary to have an expensive
internet aggregation product to achieve the same results to scrape
various data from around the internet regarding Lebanon and the
Middle East
– This includes tools such as Google News, but also a suite of other tools
– Currently the Daily Star employs MANSlink
Daily Star Innovation Roadmap 2009 | Examples of Process
Future State
• Upload/Download a Product
– The key to the Daily Star’s future
is to achieve multi-productization. Namely, to have a storydriven products rather than an edition-driven product
– The concept of a web-edition possessing uploaded (internally
created) content combined with a ‘clipping service’ of relevant
link-journalism is perfectly suited to the blogging-model
– The concept of a print-edition possessing wire content and that
content “rounded up” from the web-edition does not deviate
significantly from the current print-edition model, except that
the hierarchy of importance has changed
