RULE: A suffix is a group of letters added at the end of a word. A common suffix is –al. Adding –al changes a noun into an adjective. -al can mean for or of. The drum is a (musical) instrument. The drum is a instrument of/for music. Notice how the noun follows the adjective with the –al ending. Example: accident } accidental Nouns the have the letter ‘e’ at the end, should be changed. Drop the ‘e’ before adding a vowel like –al. The common suffixes –ship, -hood, -ness and -ment RULE: When you add –ness to a word ending in –y, change the y to i. Example: Silly } Silliness Owner + ship = ownership Child + hood = childhood Govern + ment = government Fit + ness = fitness -ness can mean, to be in that condition. Fitness = to be fit.
