ADVENT 1
2nd December 2012
Service with Communion
Entrance
M: Here is a message for all who are
weak, trembling, and worried:
"Cheer up! Don't be afraid. Your God is
coming."
C: We gather to worship in the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit, our God, our
creator, our redeemer, who walks
with us and promises to be with us
every step of our lives. Amen
entrance
R: The preparations are in place, the
excitement mounts, and for those who
are journeying to families,
arrangements are finalised, clothes
sorted, gifts wrapped and labelled.
entrance
Two thousand years ago and more, a
pregnant girl called Mary visited her
cousin Elizabeth who was also
expecting.
entrance
R: As soon as they greeted each other,
the baby in Elizabeth's womb kicked
out, and she interpreted this as a sign
from God that Mary was greatly
blessed, because she believed that all
God had promised would be fulfilled in
her life.
entrance
R: Father God, when we consider your
servant Mary, what we see is a
humility and obedience that is so often
lacking in our own lives.
entrance
R: As we hear your Word again, and
consider the one through whose body
you entered this world, remind us of
the meaning of humility and grant us a
confidence of faith that knows your
promises to us are always fulfilled.
C: Amen.

Mary’s song — The Magnificat
My soul is praising the Lord, yes! And
glad for all he is saving;
because the Lord has remembered me
— small as I am, poor as I am
— all people will call me blessed.
Mary’s song — The Magnificat
1. For he that is mighty has done me
great things.
(Holy his name. Holy his name.)
His mercy is reaching from age to age.
(Holy his name. Holy his name.)
To all those who honour him.
Mary’s song — The Magnificat
My soul is praising the Lord, yes! And
glad for all he is saving;
because the Lord has remembered me
— small as I am, poor as I am
— all people will call me blessed.
Mary’s song — The Magnificat
2. For he that is mighty has stretched
out his hand.
(Scattered the proud, shattered their
plans.)
He’s pulled down the princes fromtheir
golden thrones...
(Scattered the proud, shattered their
plans.)
He has raised to their place the poor.
Mary’s song — The Magnificat
My soul is praising the Lord, yes! And
glad for all he is saving;
because the Lord has remembered me
— small as I am, poor as I am
— all people will call me blessed.
Mary’s song — The Magnificat
3. He’s filled up the hungry with many
good things.
(Earth is renewed, all things renewed.)
But the rich, he has sent them all
empty away.
(Earth is renewed, all things renewed.)
He has kept now the promise he made.
Mary’s song — The Magnificat
My soul is praising the Lord, yes! And
glad for all he is saving;
because the Lord has remembered me
— small as I am, poor as I am
— all people will call me blessed.

CONFESSION OF SIN
M: Friends in Christ:
In this Advent Season we are called to
repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at
hand. So let us confess our sins to
God our Father, because Jesus Christ
has come to forgive us our sins.
CONFESSION OF SIN
C: O God, as we begin a new church
year, as we think of the year
passing, we see the reality of the
world, hunger, poverty, loneliness,
disease, emptiness and despair.
Our best efforts seem to change
nothing. We are ready to give up.
Forgive us.
CONFESSION OF SIN
C: In this time of Advent, we pray that
you would enable us to see the
signs of your breaking through the
tinsel and glitter we use to hide
behind. Help us to face reality with
patience and hope instead of
becoming indifferent to the world's
evil.
CONFESSION OF SIN
C: Empower us to prepare for Christ's
coming as you clean up the clutter
of our lives and create a welcoming
space for your presence in our
lives.
Forgiveness OF SIN
M: Hear the Good News! God has
forgiven you through the birth, life,
death and resurrection of our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. Receive God's
forgiveness by believing this Good
News. Through Christ, God calls each
one of us to take our parts in the story
of God's love and care, the journey of
discipleship.
Forgiveness OF SIN
C: Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to
join the journey and you enable us
to begin again and again. We come
in our own different ways, walking
in our own styles, at our own
speeds. Yes, we come to join the
journey, we come to be your
disciples.
Forgiveness OF SIN
M: Come, as we walk towards God's
future for us: a future of adventure and
risk, that demands endurance and
patience; a future that offers
enrichment and excitement, without
the false claims of being easy, a future
of discipleship.
C: We come to join the journey of
Jesus today!
Advent candles
C: In this season of expectation
We prepare to welcome Christ
Jesus, Messiah.
R: Into the bustle of our lives
and the hard to find moments of
solitude.
Advent candles
C: We prepare to welcome Christ
Jesus, Messiah
R: Into our homes and situations
along with friends and families.
C: We prepare to welcome Christ
Jesus, Messiah
R: Into our hearts, and those often
hidden parts of our lives.
Advent candles
C: We prepare to welcome Christ
Jesus, Messiah
R: For beneath the surface of your story
is an inescapable fact.
You entered this world
as vulnerable as any one of us
in order to nail that vulnerability to the
cross.
Advent candles
R: Our fears, our insecurities and our sins
and all that can separate us from God
are exchanged by your Grace for Love.
We cannot comprehend the reasoning
only marvel that Salvation comes to us
through a baby born in a stable,
and reaches out to a world in need.
Advent candles
C: In this season of anticipation
We prepare to welcome Christ Jesus,
Messiah.
Advent candles
C: O God-who-comes, we pray today
that your Spirit would revive our
spirits. In the light of the advent
candles, we pray that your word
would rekindle our visions. In this
season of Advent, prepare us to
receive you as the one who comes as
the Babe of Bethlehem and who
comes again as the King of kings.
Amen.
Greeting
M: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you Pastor.
The Readings
R: The first reading for the first Sunday
in Advent is written in chapter 61 of
Isaiah beginning at verse 1.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
The Spirit of the LORD God has taken
control of me!
The LORD has chosen and sent me
to tell the oppressed the good news,
to heal the brokenhearted,
and to announce freedom for prisoners
and captives.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
2This
is the year when the LORD God
will show kindness to us and punish
our enemies.
The LORD has sent me to comfort those
who mourn,
3 especially in Jerusalem.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
He sent me to give them
flowers in place of their sorrow,
olive oil in place of tears,
and joyous praise in place of broken
hearts.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
They will be called "Trees of Justice,"
planted by the LORD to honour his
name.
4Then they will rebuild cities that have
been in ruins for many generations.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
5They
will hire foreigners to take care of
their sheep and their vineyards.
6But they themselves will be priests
and servants of the LORD our God.
The treasures of the nations will
belong to them,
and they will be famous.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
7They
were terribly insulted and horribly
mistreated;
now they will be greatly blessed and
joyful forever.
8I, the LORD, love justice!
But I hate robbery and injustice.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
My people, I solemnly promise to reward
you with an eternal agreement.
9Your descendants will be known in
every nation.
All who see them will realize that they
have been blessed, by me, the LORD.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
10I
celebrate and shout because of my
LORD God.
His saving power and justice
are the very clothes I wear.
They are more beautiful than the
jewellery worn by a bride or a groom.
Isaiah 61:1-11 (CEV)
11The
LORD will bring about justice and
praise
in every nation on earth,
like flowers blooming in a garden.
R: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 34(CEV)
The Psalm is Psalm 34
R: 1I will always praise the LORD.
2With all my heart, I will praise the
LORD.
C: Let all who are helpless, listen and
be glad.
Psalm 34(CEV)
R: 3Honour the LORD with me!
Celebrate his great name.
4I asked the LORD for help,
C: and he saved me from all my fears.
Psalm 34(CEV)
R: 5Keep your eyes on the LORD! You will
shine like the sun and never blush with
shame. 6I was a nobody, but I prayed,
C: and the LORD saved me from all my
troubles.
Psalm 34(CEV)
R: 7If you honour the LORD, his angel will
protect you.
8Discover for yourself that the LORD is
kind.
C: Come to him for protection, and you
will be glad.
Psalm 34(CEV)
R: 9Honour the LORD! You are his special
people.
C: No one who honours the LORD will
ever be in need.
Psalm 34(CEV)
R: 11Come, my children, listen
as I teach you to respect the LORD.
C: Glory to the Father and the Son and
the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning is now and
will be for ever. Amen.
2nd Reading
R: The 2nd Reading is written in chapter
4 of 1st Timothy beginning at verse 6.
6If
you teach these things to other
followers, you will be a good servant of
Christ Jesus. You will show that you
have grown up on the teachings about
our faith and on the good instructions
you have obeyed.
1 Timothy 4: 6-12
7Don't
have anything to do with
worthless, senseless stories. Work
hard to be truly religious. 8-9As the
saying goes,
"Exercise is good for your body,
but religion helps you in every way.
It promises life now and forever.”
1 Timothy 4: 6-12
These words are worthwhile and should
not be forgotten. 10We have put our
hope in the living God, who is the
Saviour of everyone, but especially of
those who have faith. That's why we
work and struggle so hard
11Teach these things and tell everyone
to do what you say.
1 Timothy 4: 6-12
12Don't
let anyone make fun of you, just
because you are young. Set an
example for other followers by what
you say and do, as well as by your
love, faith, and purity.
R: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Mary (Luke 1:31-38)
R: ‘You will be with child and give birth to
a son, and you are to give him the
name Jesus. He will be great and will
be called the Son of the Most High.
The Lord God will give him the throne
of his father David, and he will reign
over the house of Jacob forever; his
kingdom will never end.’
Mary (Luke 1:31-38)
R: When does an ordinary life
Become extraordinary
A mundane day
Become revolutionary
A moment in time
Change history?
Mary (Luke 1:31-38)
R: When God enters in
Forgives sin
Allows us to
Begin again
When we repeat
Those words of Mary
C: ‘May it be to me as you say’
Mary (Luke 1:31-38)
R: 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you.
So the holy one to be born will be
called the Son of God.
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to
have a child in her old age, and she
who was said to be barren is in her
sixth month.
Mary (Luke 1:31-38)
R: For nothing is impossible with God.
C: "I am the Lord's servant," Mary
answered.
"May it be to me as you have said.”
Mary (Luke 1:31-38)
R: Lord God, you choose the very least
And raise us up to greatness
C: For nothing is impossible with
God.
R: You take the weak, the poor and blind
And raise us up to greatness
C: For nothing is impossible with
God.
Mary (Luke 1:35-38)
R: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is
good.
C: His love endures forever.
R: Give thanks to the God of gods.
C: His love endures forever.
R: Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
C: His love endures forever.
Mary (Luke 1:35-38)
R: Teach us obedience, Lord
In every part of our lives
Ears to hear your word
Hands to do your work
Feet to walk your path
A heart for all your people
A mouth to shout your praise
A childlike faith
Humility
Mary (Luke 1:35-38)
R: Confidence
That says
To the possible
And the impossible
C: I am the Lord's servant
May it be to me as you have said.
Amen
Luke 1:46-55
M: The Gospel is written in chapter 1 of
Luke, beginning at verse 46
C: Praise to you, O Lord.
M: 46Mary said:
With all my heart I praise the Lord,
47and I am glad because of God my
Saviour.
Luke 1:46-55
48He
cares for me, his humble servant.
From now on, all people will say
God has blessed me.
49God All-Powerful has done great
things for me,
and his name is holy.
50He always shows mercy
to everyone who worships him.
Luke 1:46-55
51The
Lord has used his powerful arm
to scatter those who are proud.
52He drags strong rulers from their
thrones
and puts humble people in places of
power.
53God gives the hungry good things to
eat,
Luke 1:46-55
and sends the rich away
with nothing.
54He helps his servant Israel
and is always merciful to his people.
55The Lord made this promise to our
ancestors,
to Abraham and his family forever!
This is the Gospel of the Lord
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
Luke 1:46-55
R: My soul magnifies the Lord!
All is ready
Stable prepared
Shepherds working
Magi journeying
Gifts are chosen
C: My soul magnifies the Lord!
Luke 1:46-55
R: A city awaits
Crowded and bustling
Stars are shining
People expecting
A drama unfolding
C: My soul magnifies the Lord!
Luke 1:46-55
R: The Lord is coming
To save his people
Mary's obedience
Jesus' willingness
Your gracious gift to us.
C: My soul magnifies the Lord!
Luke 1:46-55
R: The Lord is coming
To save his people
Mary's obedience
Jesus' willingness
Your gracious gift to us.
C: My soul magnifies the Lord!
Statement of faith
C: We believe in God, the one who
comes before us and goes behind
us, creating life and opportunities to
love and care for the world.
We believe in Jesus Christ who walks
with us into real life each day. He is
God, yet human like us and
experienced all life's joys and pains
and challenges like we do.
Statement of faith
C: But his love is so great that not sin
nor suffering, nor even death could
stop it. Today our Lord Jesus lives
and his love continues to bring new
life to the world. We believe in the
Holy Spirit who comes like the wind
and blows in and through us to
bring God's power and light to all
the world.
Statement of faith
C: The Spirit breathes life into us, the
body of Christ we call the Church,
and enables us to follow the way of
Christ. We believe in God, who goes
before and behind, with, in and
through us, bringing hope and life
and newness to the world. Amen.

Praise to the Lord, the almighty
1. Praise to the Lord, the almighty,
the king of creation;
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy
health and salvation:
Join the full throng;
Wake, harp and psalter and song,
Sound forth in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, the almighty
2. Praise to the Lord, who o’er all
things so wondrously reigneth,
Who as on wings of an eagle
uplifteth, sustaineth:
Hast Thou not seen?
All that is needful hath been
Granted in what He ordaineth.
Praise to the Lord, the almighty
4. Praise to the Lord, who doth
prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy shall
daily attend thee:
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
Who with His love doth befriend thee.
Praise to the Lord, the almighty
5. Praise to the Lord, O let all that is
in me adore Him.
All that hath life and breath, come
now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen
Sound from His people again:
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

Tell out, my soul
1. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of

Unnumbered blessings, give my

his holy name - the Lord, the mighty
One.
Tell out, my soul
