Teaching, tutoring and development of courses
Teaching, Tutoring and Grading in Literature: Since 2005 I have, in varying degrees,
been teaching and grading students in courses at the Department of Literature, Uppsala
university. These courses have been included in the ordinary program of the department
as well as specially designed for teacher candidates. In particular, I would like to mention
here the course Orden som befriar [The words that set free] on the C level, which is very
close to my research interests. Within the concept Svenskämnet i det mångkulturella
samhället [Swedish in multicultural society] I have developed the course Kanon i
förändring [Canon in change]. This course, as well as the course Den globala litteraturen
[The global literature] is intended for teacher candidates on an advanced level. I have
been tutoring and/or grading essay-writing students at all the levels (A-master), as well as
teacher candidates at the C- and master levels. Altogether, I have taught 202 hours at the
basic levels, and graded and/or tutored essay-writing students 33,5 hours. On the
advanced levels, I have taught 183 hours, and tutored and/or graded essay-writing
students 35 hour.
Teaching Rhetorics: Since 2009 I have, in varying degrees, been teaching and grading
students in rhetorics at the A- and B- levels at the Department of Literature, Uppsala
university. I have also angaged in the development of clourses within this field. In
particular, I take an interest in modern theories about rhetoric, such as performativity, in
relation to issues of power (intersectionality, gender theory, queer theory). In rhetorics, I
have been tutoring and grading essay-writing students at the B- and C-levels. Altogether,
I have taught 330 hours at the basic levels, and tutored and/or graded essay-writing
students 43,5 hours.
Teaching Gender Studies: Since 2005 I have, in varying degrees, been teaching and
grading students at the A-B- and advanced levels in gender studies, Centre for Gender
Research, Uppsala university. I have mainly taught queer theory, performativity and
transgender studies, but also masculinity, media and discourse analysis. I have also been
tutoring and/or grading students on the B- and master level. Altogether, I have taught 116
hours at the basic levels, and tutored and/or graded essay-writing students 2 hours. On the
advanced levels, I have taught 6 hours, and tutored and/or graded essay-writing students
1 hour.
Other Teaching, Tutoring and Grading: As an external supervisor, I have been tutoring
an essay-writing student within the Euroculture-programme (advanced level, 2008–09, 5
hours), Uppsala university. At the Center of Evolutionary Biology at Uppsala university I
have tutored an essay-writing student on the A-level (1 hour). During 2010, I also taught
two lectures in literature at the Scandinavian Department, Vilnius’ university, Latvia (4
hours). Finally, during 2012 I tutored an essay-writing student within the teachersprogramme at Uppsala university (advanced level, 3 hours).

My pedagogical credo
In teaching I depart from what I see as a foundational curiosity in the student. My task as
a teacher is to promote this curiosity, or, in case it is not evident, to elicit it. The strategies
used depend on the level of education. On basic levels it is necessary for the students to
understand certain fundamental concepts – here my role is that of a tutor, but I avoid
imposing on the students my own opinions as to what is right or wrong. On higher levels
I rather take on the role as a moderator, in that I conduct and supervise the students’
discussions, reflections and search for information. Furthermore, the teaching strategy
must also be adapted to the kind of student group I am teaching. For example, the
strategy and content used for teacher candidates, who conceptualize the studies in literary
history as a complement to their education as teachers, may differ considerably from
those who take these courses as free components. It is important to find out the right way
to motivate the students and enhance their interest in the matter.
To a large extent my pedagogical attitude is based on an awareness of
culturally conditioned distinctions between men and women, and between male and
female. This awareness is present through the whole process of teaching, including
reading-lists and evaluation blanks. I try to achieve an even distribution of gender in
every area where this is applicable, and I also attempt at sex-neutral treatment of male
and female students. I hope that such an attitude, which also comprises attention to
aspects such as ethnicity, social class and sexual orientation, will have as an effect that a
larger number of students can feel included in the learning-situation as well as in the joint
production of knowledge.
Pedagogic projects
In 2005–2006 I attended a pedagogic course for university teachers at Uppsala university.
One requirement was to carry out a pedagogic mini-project. Since I am interested in
gender and issues of equal rights I chose to investigate the distribution of male and
female fiction writers represented in the literature lists used at the A and B levels at the
Department of Literature, Uppsala University, in 2005. This investigation was then used
as a starting-point for a number of interviews with a sample of teachers employed at the
department. The main focus was on the choice of literature from a pedagogic point of
view. The interviews were then analyzed from the line of thoughts in Fredrik
Bondestam’s book Könsmedveten pedagogik för universitets- och högskolelärare: en
introduktion och bibliografi [Pedagogy for university- and university college teachers
based on gender awareness: introduction and bibliography] (Stockholm, 2005).
The result of the investigation was that there seems to be a discrepancy between the
awareness most teachers express towards gender-perspectives and the importance they
attach to it, on one side, and the actually observed uneven distribution between male and
female fiction writers on the A and B levels, on the other.
