The UAF is completing it’s 50 Years in 2011 and celebrating
this auspicious occasion as Golden Jubilee Year 2011.
Besides participating the mega event of Golden Jubilee Week
(March 13-20, 2011) of UAF, which was really an historic
landmark event,
the Department of Livestock Management is celebrating its
Week from May 2-7, 2011.
Faculty is celebrating two weeks from May 2-7, 2011 (LM & PS)
and May 9-14, 2011 (ABG & IAN&FT).

BACKGROUND
•
Agriculture came in this part of the continent in 1890 in this
Sandal Bar Delta, since then keeping Livestock has been an
integral part of Crop Production
•
Agricultural system still prevailing in the country and is based
on Animal Agriculture (bullocks, pulling, carting, soil fertility)
•
Share (52 %) in Agriculture
•
Livestock has always contributed its share within different
production systems either being Nomadic, Transhumance,
Sedentary or mainly Household.

MANAGEMENT OF LIVESTOCK FARM

Livestock Prod needs investment than Agriculture (FAO, 2000)
Sustained flow of benefits are always challenging from livestock
enterprises
Despite financial constraints and lack of proper manpower, we
have tried to get income upto 1.4 M
Pooled resources (Since 2007) under Director Farms have given
some higher boost to income
Latest innovations has made further improvements
Now income has gone up, calf mortality in under control,
breeding plans have been in place, & heifers are ready for
replacements
Management is a full time job, I still recommend to have a full
time Farm Officer
Primarily on good management and Manager abilities counts

MOTT GRASS
• 9 Stupms of Mott Grass were brought in the Dept
by Dr Ezuno
• LPRI, Bahadurnagar and LES Jahangirabad
• Ignored at UAF
• We don’t claim that its best grass of the world but it
is fodder of lean period
• It’s digestibility could have been improved, it was
best for can also go higher silage, digestibility and
palatability
• No Livestock Ext activities (Production and
management strategies)

Have been active clubs but in the past due to the
closure of degree the activities were slowed
•
We have worked in Cholistan Desert and
Dr Abdul Raziq has been so inspired that he has
taken lead on this.
•
Sweden scientists are ready to launch a big project
in Cholistan or NAs.
•
Dr A Raziq have done PhD and now he is world
renowned scientist and represented Pakistan in
more than 25 countries.
•
Beautiful thing is that he is Ambassador of the LM,
FAH and UAF
