Students from the Faculty of Health, Life and Social Sciences
will be based at the new Sighthill Campus from January 2011.
Location
The Sighthill Campus is located in the west of
the city just off the A71 Calder Road.
Why are we moving?
The benefits:
• The Sighthill Campus has been used by Edinburgh Napier previously.
As part of the University’s Estate Strategy the campus has been
redeveloped with the original spine block being renovated and three
new buildings added. The work has been completed on time and on
budget.
• Edinburgh Napier is committed to providing the best facilities for our
students and in turn help you get the best out of your time with us.
• The new Sighthill Campus will mean Edinburgh Napier will now have
three main campuses, one for each of our faculties.
• Students will have easier access to academic and support staff as well
as cutting edge facilities.
• The new campus has a number of environmental features.
Sustainability has been key part of the planning. Low carbon emission
and effective energy performance are important elements of the
building.
Who is moving to Sighthill and when?
Key Facts:
• It is only Faculty of Health, Life & Social Sciences students that will
move in January 2011.
• Faculty staff and Professional Services staff will also be in the building
as will the Principal’s Office.
• From January 2011 you will no longer have any classes at Comely
Bank or Canaan Lane.
• There will be over 500 staff and 2,500 students based at the new
campus.

The Facilities
The new campus will include:
• A modern four-storey atrium with cafe, catering outlet and space to
meet friends and colleagues.
• PC labs with brand new IT equipment. There is also wi-fi access
throughout the campus.
• Three modern lecture theatres, the largest holding 350 people.
• 22 seminar rooms and classrooms of varying sizes to suit different
types of teaching.
• 25 specialised teaching rooms, including clinical skills laboratories, six
project rooms and five research rooms.
• Five-storey Learning Resource Centre, with a double height space on
the top floor, with spectacular views to the east of Edinburgh.
The Facilities
Sports Centre
• A separate brand new sports facility has been built at the campus for
use by all students of the University.
• There is a sports hall large enough for two basketball-sized courts or
eight badminton courts. The hall can also be set up for volleyball,
netball, hockey and 5-a-side football.
• FHLSS will also have laboratory spaces adjacent to the main sports
hall, with the ability for the biomechanics laboratory to extend into the
hall for specific project work.
• The fitness suite will contain all the latest exercise equipment and over
500 fitness classes per year.
• Student membership fees will be £100 per year. Free for Sports
Science students.
• The Centre will be open seven days per week, 7.30am – 10pm
Monday to Friday, and from 8.30am – 5.30pm on Saturday and
Sunday.

Monday to Friday – 7am – 10pm.
Saturday & Sunday – 7am – 6pm.
Main Dining Area:
Monday to Friday - 8am – 3pm.
Starbucks Cafe:
Monday to Friday - 8am -5pm.
There will be a number of vending machines on campus.
Travel
Buses
The following buses all currently stop on Calder Road. Real time bus
information will be displayed on screens in the reception/atrium area.
Lothian bus services 3, 3A, 25.
• 23 minutes from Haymarket.
• 30 minutes from North Bridge.
Lothian bus services 34 and 35.
• 25 minutes from Fountainbridge.
• 31 minutes from Forrest Road.
These buses are all accessible from Edinburgh Napier’s Student Accommodation.
Lothian bus services 21 and 32 also provide a less frequent bus
service to the campus, from the north of the city and the Wester
Hailes/Clovenstone area.
Lothian bus services 2, 18, 12, 21, 22 all service Edinburgh Park and
the Gyle Centre. These buses stop at the Broomhouse roundabout
behind Stevenson College, which is about a 5-10 minute walk.

Buses from West Lothian
First Bus Services: X26, 27, X27, 28, X28, X32, X33 and 427 all stop on
the Calder Road.
Buses from East Lothian
First Bus Services: 62A, 62B & 62 service Melrose, Peebles, Penicuik
and Edinburgh. X95 services Carlisle, Galashiels, Eskbank and
Edinburgh.
Students travelling from East Lothian will in most cases need to get a bus
into Edinburgh and then connect to Sighthill Campus, via bus or train.

Lothian buses will monitor the demand for the services that run along
Calder Road and adapt services if necessary. More details on bus routes
and frequency can be found on www.lothianbuses.com.
The entrance road to the campus at Sighthill Court has been designed to
accommodate a turning circle for buses coming in from Calder Road,
however Lothian Buses have not yet confirmed if they will use this facility.
There will not be an intercampus bus service.
In terms of on-street parking, Sighthill Bank will continue to have single
yellow and double yellow lines along most of its length. Broomhouse
Road has restricted parking all day. If you do choose to park your car on
the street then you do so at your own risk. If you do not have an
Edinburgh Napier parking permit it is advisable to use public transport to
get to the campus.
Student permit applications can only be accepted where availability
allows. Please note that there is no automatic guarantee that students will
be allowed to park at any campus, as the permit scheme allocation is
designed primarily for staff and disabled students.

Trains
There are two train stations near to the new campus. Edinburgh Park
is around a 15 minute walk and South Gyle is around 25 minutes.
Edinburgh Park is serviced by two trains: the 230 between Edinburgh
and Bathgate and the 230 between Newcraighall and Dunblane. Both
services run every 30 minutes on weekdays.
South Gyle is serviced by: the 242 between Edinburgh and
Cowdenbeath, the 242 between Edinburgh and Glenrothes and the 242
between Edinburgh and Markinch. Trains from Livingston North and
South also stop at this station.
Students travelling from East Lothian and Newcraighall would need to
get a train to Edinburgh Waverley and connect.

Travel
• A new pedestrian crossing and right hand turn for vehicles is planned
to be built in the future. As part of our planning consent, we
contributed money to the Council to build these but they have not
confirmed when they will start work on them. During the short term, if
you are coming into Sighthill from the city on the bus, you will need to
use the underpass to access the campus, as it involves crossing
Calder Road. We know that these are an absolute priority for our
students and staff so we are pressing the Council strongly to start this
work as soon as possible
• Buses will not be able to directly access the campus until the right
hand turn is developed. When leaving the campus there will be real
time bus information in the reception so you will know exactly what
time to leave the campus to go to the bus stop. If you are heading in
the direction of the city, you will not need to use the underpass as the
bus stops are on the same side of Calder Road as the campus.
Travel
Cycling:
•There are bike paths to the north
and south of the new campus.
•There are designated areas for
cycle racks – which will include
some lockable storage. There will
also be access to showers within
the sports facility for cyclists, but the
opening times for the sports facility
and system for how this will work
has yet to be confirmed.
