qualified novice practice, towards experienced,
expert practice
• continue to develop within current level of practice
• identify development needs
• access and use opportunities for educational and
professional development
• encourage skill development based on competencies
• assist the provision evidence for revalidation
purposes and for the review processes within
the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework
Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland

professional development reviews

Using the Framework
Nursing and Midwifery
Educators can use the Framework to:
• plan and deliver education and training to meet the
rapidly changing needs of practitioners
Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland
Using the Framework
Nursing and Midwifery
• The first step in using the Framework is to identify
your current level of practice. The overview pages
for each level will help you to identify the level you
are currently working within
• Once you have identified the appropriate level of
practice you can explore the knowledge, skills and
behaviours expected from practitioners working at
that level. This will help you to identify your learning
and development needs. You may find it helpful to
discuss this with your manager.
Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland
Using the Framework
• The levels are cumulative and practitioners are
expected to meet the criteria described in lower
levels
