Demographic data
Demographic data
Work history and experience are crucial. Once young
people get a foot in their door they can stay in work, but this
helps them get the foot in the door
Training and qualifications are a pre-requisite. Employers
use these to filter, so need to be job relevant and valued by
employers
Confidence looking for work is a crucial signal
Young people are a diverse group. Other issues like caring
responsibilities and health impact, as with other age groups
Case study: Scotland
Our partnership has allowed our customers to access:
• Get Into. Short vocational courses designed with employers
• Development Awards. Micro grants to tackle barriers
• Enterprise. A four day course focused on starting a business
So far this has delivered:
• 10 out of 12 participants getting jobs with DHL
• 12 out of 12 gaining Apprenticeships with Arnold Clark
Key lessons.
• When designed with employers, short training can work
• When there’s a good job prospect, young people will engage
Case study: Birmingham
Hypothesis that provision designed by young people for young
people would be more successful:
• Youth Innovation Board. Giving young people a formal role in
programme design
• Engagement mechanisms. Including focus groups, customer
feedback etc
So far this has delivered:
• ½ of 441 Initiate participants have progressed into further
education and training
• 90% said the programme supported their progression
Key lessons.
• Involving YP in design can work and change delivery

“The boxing was really good and when we
toured Hotel Indigo, I was keen to have a go at
everything,” he said. “I’ve been out of work for
the past six months and I am really keen to get
another job. Young people are often criticised
for not wanting to work, but that’s certainly
not the case here – we’re all fired up!”
JAMES BUCKLEY, 23, ANFIELD,
UNEMPLOYED FOR 6 MONTHS
“I’m always looking for opportunities to learn new
skills and make progress, and this week has been
a real inspiration,” she said. “Glenn and Richie
have taught us skills we can use in the workplace,
and visiting Hotel Indigo and the BT Call Centre
were also real eye-openers. I never knew just how
many different kinds of jobs there were available
and I have handed in my CV in the hope I might
be considered when opportunities arise.”
MELISSA LYONS, 22, BOOTLE.

“The Ingeus TKO Project is remarkable in helping young
unemployed people gain confidence and we’ve been proud to
be involved in it. By just listening to young people you quickly
discover how important such a project like this really is.
“All the youngsters clearly enjoyed learning about our
operations, from the restaurant and housekeeping to
maintenance.
