Leidens Ontzet
Vanaf de zestiende eeuw keerde het
economisch tij. Het was de tijd van de
Hervorming en protestantse stromingen werden fel vervolgd. Leiden sloot
zich in 1572 aan bij de Nederlandse
opstand tegen de Spaanse overheersing en werd door de Spanjaarden
belegerd. De inwoners vielen ten
prooi aan ziekte en honger en bijna
was Leiden in handen gevallen van
de Spanjaarden, maar op 3 oktober
1574 vluchtten de Spaanse troepen
en trokken de troepen van Willem van
Oranje Leiden binnen. Zij deelden
voedsel uit: een half brood met kaas
en haring voor iedere inwoner. Deze
bevrijding, Leidens Ontzet, wordt tot
op de dag van vandaag gevierd met
een gigantisch volksfeest. Als dank
voor het heldhaftige verzet dat de stad
tijdens het beleg bood, stichtte Willem
van Oranje op 8 februari 1575 de
Universiteit Leiden.
The Relief of Leiden
In the sixteenth century, the economic tide turned. It was the era of
the Reformation, when Protestant
movements were fiercely persecuted.
In 1572, Leiden joined the Dutch
revolt (led by the Prince of Orange)
against the Spanish invaders, and
the city was beseiged by the Spanish.
The citizens fell prey to disease and
hunger, and Leiden almost fell into
the hands of the Spanish, but on 3
October 1574 the Spanish invaders
fled and the troops of the Prince of
Orange entered the city. They distributed food to the starving citizens: half a
loaf of bread with cheese and herring
for every person. This liberation, the
Relief of Leiden, is still celebrated
every year, right up to the present
day, with a gigantic local party. As a
reward for the city’s resistance during
the Spanish occupation, William of
Orange founded Leiden University on
8 February 1575.

De Burcht, 1763
Leiden’s history stretches back a long
way; long before our calendar started,
people had settled on the banks of
the Rhine. By 1200 the settlement
had grown to such a size that the
Count of Holland gave the people city
rights, heralding the birth of the city
of Leiden. At the end of the fifteenth
century, Leiden was the biggest city
in the county of Holland, mainly due
to the international cloth industry
for which the city was famous. The
prosperity enjoyed by Leiden in this
period is reflected in such imposing
buildings as the Hooglandse Kerk and
the Pieterskerk.

De geschiedenis van Leiden gaat
ver terug; al ver voor onze jaartelling
woonden mensen aan de oevers van
de Rijn. Omstreeks 1200 had de
nederzetting zich zodanig ontwikkeld
dat de graaf van Holland de inwoners
stadsrechten gaf; de stad Leiden
was geboren. Aan het eind van de
vijftiende eeuw was Leiden de grootste
stad van het graafschap Holland. Dit
was voor een groot deel te danken
aan de internationale lakenindustrie.
De voorspoed die Leiden in die tijd
doormaakte, weerspiegelt zich in
bouwwerken als de Hooglandse Kerk
en de Pieterskerk.

Geschiedenis
De negentiende eeuw
Na 1815 ging het langzaam maar zeker
weer beter met de stad. De Leidse industrie werd in de tweede helft van de
eeuw minder eenzijdig: nieuwe industrieën, zoals metaalnijverheid, grafische
industrie en conserven, kwamen tot
ontwikkeling. Dat de welvaart van de
stad eind negentiende, begin twintigste
eeuw toch groeide, is vooral aan de
prachtige winkelpanden te zien.
De Leidse sleutels
Leiden is de Sleutelstad. Overal in de
stad duiken de sleutels op. Dat is al zo
sinds 1293, toen op de officiële documenten van de ‘stadt Leyde’ steeds
vaker een stadszegel verscheen met
daarop Petrus. In zijn hand draagt de
apostel een sleutel. Het verband tussen
Petrus en een sleutel is al oud. Hij gaat
terug op een Bijbeltekst (Mattheüs 16
vers 19) waarin Jezus tegen Petrus
zegt: “Ik zal u geven de sleutels van het
koninkrijk der hemelen.” Al in 1121
lieten de graven van Holland een kapel
bouwen die gewijd was aan Petrus
en Paulus, de huidige Pieterskerk in
Leiden.

Decline
Leiden's cloth industry was steadily
declining in the eighteenth century:
jobs dried up and people moved
elsewhere. The downturn caused by
the failing cloth industry led to unrest.
The ongoing war waged by Napoleon
only aggravated the situation. The final
straw came when Leiden was struck by
catastrophic disaster. A ship carrying
gunpowder exploded on 12 January
1807, destroying dozens of houses and
killing at least 160 people.
The nineteenth century
After 1815 the city began to show
signs of recovery. Leiden's industry began to diversify in the second half of
the century with emerging new sectors
such as metal, printing and canning.
The beautiful retail buildings offer unequivocal proof that prosperity started
picking up in the late nineteenth and
early twentieth centuries.
The keys to Leiden
Leiden is the City of Keys; the motif of
keys can be seen all over the city. This
dates back to 1293 when a city seal
depicting Saint Peter featured on official documents of the ‘stadt Leyde’.
In his hand the apostle carries a key.
The combination of Saint Peter and a
key is a well-known symbol taken from
the Bible (Matthew, 16, v. 19), when
Jesus says to Peter: ‘I will give you the
keys to the City of Heaven.’ As early
as 1121 the Counts of Holland had a
chapel built, dedicated to Saint Peter
and Saint Paul. This is the present
Pieterskerk.

Loop rechtdoor en u vindt aan
uw linkerhand 2. Stadscafé van
der Werff en rechts Rijksmuseum
Volkenkunde. Sla rechtsaf en u

Put. Deze dankt zijn naam aan
Jan Janzoon Put, die in 1619 een
molen op het bolwerk aan de Rijn

route langs het Rapenburg waar

Dit restaurant is gevestigd in een
historisch pand, waar begin vorige
eeuw een drogisterij onderdak

De Hortus botanicus Leiden is
de oudste botanische tuin van
Nederland (sinds 1590). Achter
het Academiegebouw van de
Universiteit Leiden ontdekt u
planten uit Oost- en ZuidoostAzië, Zuid-Europa en ZuidAfrika. Carolus Clusius (15261609) introduceerde hier de

collection comprises both
the old and the new: prints,
lacquerware, ceramics, herbaria,
animals, clothing, maps and
hundreds of other treasures. The
collection is composed entirely
of artifacts and objects gathered

huren. Via het Rapenburg komt u bij 4.
Jeugdboekhandel Silvester. U kunt even
binnenstappen bij de 5. Hortus botanicus waar een prachtige tuin is met verschillende bloemen en planten. Loop
het Rapenburg af. Op 6. nr. 116 heeft
Koning Willem-Alexander gewoond en
op nr. 45 Prinses Beatrix. U komt uit
bij het 7. Van der Werfpark. Van der
Werf was burgemeester van Leiden ten
tijde van het Leidens Ontzet. Vervolgens kunt u de route vervolgen en u
laten verrassen bij 8. Speelgoedwinkel
Lila. Dit zal zeker voor uw kinderen
weer een leuke pauze zijn in de route.
Daarna komt u bij de 9. Pieterskerk.
Volgens sommigen was de toren (in de
zestiende eeuw nog zo’n 100 meter
hoog) vroeger zelfs vanaf de Noordzee
te herkennen. Loop verder en u komt
langs 10. ’t Suppiershuysinghe, het koffiehuisje van Leiden, en het 11. Jean
Michelshof. Steek de Breestraat
over en ga via 12. Bagels & Beans
naar de 13. V&D. Bovenin de V&D
heb je een mooie uitkijk over de
hele stad. Als u rechts de Vismarkt
inloopt, komt u in een kindvriendelijk gebied met leuke plekken,

Leiden. Steek het water over en
u komt bij diverse restaurants en

en steegjes in het historische centrum die het shoppen zo leuk maken. Een goede service, vriendelijke

Koopavond en -zondag
In Leiden is het iedere laatste zondag van de maand
koopzondag. De winkels in het centrum mogen echter zelf bepalen of zij ook op de andere zondagen van
de maand open willen zijn. De wekelijkse koopavond
is op donderdag. De winkels zijn dan tot 21.00 uur
open.
Verrassend Winkelweekend
Tien keer per jaar vindt in Leiden een Verrassend
Winkelweekend plaats. Terwijl u op zaterdag (10.00
– 17.00 uur) en zondag (12.00 – 17.00 uur) heerlijk

Ten times a year Leiden has a Surprising Shopping
Weekend. While leisurely shopping on Saturday
(10.00 to 17.00) and Sunday (12.00 to 17.00),

Muren' omvat totaal 101 muurgedichten.
U begint bij de 1. Morspoort, waar u
tevens kunt parkeren met de auto. Via de
brug over het Galgewater komt u bij de
2. Rembrandtplaats. Rembrandt van Rijn
werd geboren in de Weddesteeg. Aan het
einde van de straat, links, komt u het eerste 3. muurgedicht tegen. Loop vervolgens
via de Rembrandtstraat en Groenhazengracht naar het Rapenburg voor het
volgende 4. muurgedicht en loop door naar
het 5. Van der Werfpark. Hier kunt u even
uitrusten om vervolgens de wandelroute

een kopje koffie bij Brasserie de Poort
met een erg mooi uitzicht. Loop langs
de haven richting de Oude Rijn. Steek
bij het kruispunt bij de Hooigracht
de weg over richting de Kaasmarkt.
Dit loopt u af richting de Hooglandse
Kerkgracht. Hier kunt u het eerste monument bezichtigen: 2. de Hooglandse
Kerk. Loop door naar de Nieuwe Rijn.
Voor een lunch of kopje koffie/thee kunt
u bijvoorbeeld terecht bij 3. Einstein,
4. Dende of 5. Annies. In de lente
en zomer liggen hier terrasboten op
het water. Vervolgens loopt u via de
Aalmarkt en 6. Suitsupply richting
Galgewater. Tussendoor kunt u via de
zijweg naar 7. Bootjes en Broodjes. Hier
kunt u een boot huren om de tocht via
het water af te leggen. Loop verder over
het 8. Galgewater en u ziet een deel
van historisch Leiden. De naam komt
van de galgen die vroeger langs dit
water stonden, waar veroordeelde misdadigers werden opgehangen. Via
9. Café de Grote Beer vindt u de bekendste gracht van Leiden: het
l. Rapenburg. Aan de gracht
bevinden zich veel statige panden,
maar ook het Academiegebouw,
het bestuursbureau en diverse
andere gebouwen van de Universiteit Leiden, evenals vele studentenhuizen, het Rijksmuseum van
Oudheden, de Hortus botanicus
Leiden en Japanmuseum SieboldHuis. In het Academiegebouw
bevindt zich het Zweetkamertje
waar bekende Leidse alumni,
zoals Koning Willem-Alexander
en Prinses Beatrix, hun handtekening hebben gezet. Hier vindt
u ook 11. Café Barrera, waar de
balkonscène van de film Soldaat
van Oranje is opgenomen. Steek
het Rapenburg over en u komt bij
de V. Hortus botanicus, de oudste,
nog bestaande botanische tuin van
Nederland. De tuin is vanaf het
begin toegankelijk geweest voor
het publiek, iets dat vooral in de
zestiende en zeventiende eeuw
een uitzondering was. Tevens komt
u ook langs de 13. Sterrewacht
en loopt u langs de historische
14. Vreewijkbrug. Als u het water
oversteekt komt u bij 15. de Vliet,
waarvandaan de Pilgrims zijn
vertrokken naar Amerika. Loop
vervolgens langs het 16. Van der
Werfpark. Hier kunt u even ontspannen met mooi weer. Wanneer
u verder door loopt komt u langs
het restaurant 17. Sorrento en het
18. Sint Anna Aalmoeshuis. Sla
linksaf de Herengracht op. Aan de
rechterkant ligt het Ankerpark. Via
de 19. Kleine Havenbrug komt u

the Oude Rijn, cross the road at the
junction by the Hooigracht, in the
direction of the Kaasmarkt, and walk
to the end of the street in the direction
of the Hooglandse Kerkgracht. This
is where you will see the first historic
monument: 2. The Hooglandse Kerk.
Then carry on towards the Nieuwe Rijn.
A good place for lunch or a cup of coffee is for instance 3. Einstein, 4. Dende
or 5. Annies. In spring and summer,
several cafés will have terraces on the
water. You can then continue via the
Aalmarkt and 6. Suitsupply towards
Galgewater. En route you can take a
side street to 7. Bootjes en Broodjes,
where you can rent a boat if you prefer
to tour by water. Carry on, crossing the
8. Galgewater, a remarkable part of historic Leiden. The name comes from the
gallows that used to be lined up along
the water, where criminals would be
hanged. Via 9. Café de Grote Beer, that
has an outdoor playground for children,
you will find Leiden’s best known
canal: the l. Rapenburg.
This canal is lined with many
imposing buildings, including the
Academy Building, the administration department and several
other premises that are part of
Leiden University, as well as many
student houses, the National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden’s Hortus botanicus and "Sieboldhuis"
SieboldHuis, a museum dedicated
to Japan. This is also where you
will find 11. Café Barrera. Cross
the Rapenburg and you will arrive
at the V. Hortus botanicus, the
oldest existing botanical garden in
the Netherlands. The garden has
always been open to the public,
something that was an exception
in the sixteenth and seventeenth
centuries. You will also pass the

De binnenstad is autoluw, maar in een cirkel
rond het historische hart liggen meer dan
drieduizend parkeerplaatsen, verspreid over verschillende parkeergarages en parkeerterreinen.
Parkeerterrein Haagweg (tip)
Het grootste parkeerterrein van Leiden ligt aan
de Haagweg en functioneert als een volwaardig
transferium. Zowel overdag als ‘s avonds rijden
(gratis) pendelbusjes van het parkeerterrein naar
alle plekken in het centrum en uiteraard ook
weer terug.
Openbaar vervoer
Leiden is uitstekend te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer. Vanuit alle richtingen stoppen er
treinen op station Leiden Centraal. Vanuit het
station loopt u zo de binnenstad in. Bussen
rijden met een hoge frequentie naar vrijwel alle
plekken binnen de stad.

Leiden’s biggest car park is on the Haagweg,
and provides full park-and-ride services to
the city centre. During the daytime and in the
evenings, shuttle buses will take you from the
car park to all the main spots in the city – and
bring you back, of course.
Public transport
Leiden is easy to reach by public transport.
Trains from all directions stop at Leiden Central
Station, and the city centre is just a short walk
from the station. Or, if you prefer, there is a
frequent bus service from the station to almost
anywhere in the city.
