RESPONSORIAL PSALM
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble,
and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Alleluia, alleluia!
A great prophet has appeared among us;
God has visited his people.
Alleluia!
Happy the one whose offence is forgiven,
whose sin is remitted.
O happy the one to whom the Lord
imputes no guilt, in whose spirit is no guile.
But now I have acknowledged my sins;
my guilt I did not hide.
I said: ‘I will confess my offence to the Lord.’
And you, Lord, have forgiven the guilt of my sin.
Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord,
exult, you just!
O come, ring out your joy,
all you upright of heart.

MOVED WITH COMPASSION
Verse 41 of this week’s reading begins, ‘Feeling
sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand.’ This
translation is from the Jerusalem Bible but if we
were to consider other translations of the Bible we
would find other phrases used such as: moved with
pity; filled with pity; moved with compassion; filled
with compassion; or even, filled with anger. By
comparison, ‘Feeling sorry for him’ seems a weak
translation. Jesus’ reaction is a fully human one of
indignation at what this
man is forced to endure. It
is a gut-wrenching response
from the very core of Jesus’
humanity.
There is a story of Francis
of Assisi in which he
encountered a horribly
disfigured leper. Initially,
Francis was repulsed by the man but remembered
that this man too was a child of God and made in
the image and likeness of God. Overcoming his
fears, Francis ran forward and embraced the man.
Rather than seeing the disease, Francis saw the
person. We can ask the question, Who is your
leper? Who is the person in your life that you need
to embrace rather than reject? Who would benefit
from you viewing them with different eyes? Soft
eyes! Eyes of compassion! –Greg Sunter

MEETING REMINDER
The Parish Finance Committee meets this
Thursday 19 February at 7.30pm at Our Lady’s
Parish House.
CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES SUNDAY
Today is Catholic Social Services
Sunday. Today we are encouraged
to reflect on our own response to
the Gospel call to compassionate service to those
who are the poor, marginalised or excluded of our
society.
S V DE P APPEAL THIS WEEKEND
The parish conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul
Society is conducting a fund-raising drive at Masses
this weekend. This is our belated Christmas appeal.
We disbursed 25 hampers and $1000 or so of
supplementary aid over Christmas. It ran us short
for the $5000 or so that we distribute in the form
of food vouchers, pharmacy bills, utility bill
supplements, rent assistance, to
needy households in Brunswick in a
normal quarter. The Vinnies Store in
Sydney Road has proven to be a
good source of funds. But 170
households visited in six months
means that the need is ongoing. Our seven
members thank past donors for their generosity.
We always need new members. (Phone Brian 0413
416 766.)
SYDNEY ROAD STREET PARTY – HELPERS!!
The Sydney Road Street Party will be held
on Sunday 1 March from 12noon. This
year, we will have a craft stall on the street
and amusements in the church grounds.
Helpers are needed to sell craft items. It’s a
great way to meet other parishioners, as
well as enjoy the street party. If you would
like to help, please add your name and contact
details to the list in the Gathering Space.
CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN
CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS
A Muslim Imam, Afroz Ali, will introduce
a conversation on issues of interest to
Christians and Muslims. Come along for
conversation and a cuppa at St Ambrose’s Parish
Centre next Saturday 21 February from 2.00 –
4.00pm. All welcome!
LENTEN PRAYER GROUP AT MARISTS
On the Thursday Evenings of
Lent, commencing
26 February (and excluding
5 March, due to Judith
Dupre’s session at St
Ambrose’s) there will be a Lenten Prayer Group
held in the Marist Brothers Chapel from 7.45 –
8.30pm at 106 Holden Street, North Fitzroy. It will
be a quiet time of reflection and prayer with a
focus each week on the Gospel Reading for the
following Sunday. The leaning will be towards
silent, personal prayer but in a group setting. For
catering purposes, please sign the sheet on the
church table today or next weekend. All welcome!
OTHER LENTEN REFLECTION GROUPS
The first Lenten reflection group in Italian
begins this Tuesday 17 February at 10.30am
at St Ambrose’s Parish House, led by Sr Julita. It
will continue for the Tuesdays of Lent.

opportunity for an extra prayer practice during the
season of Lent.

Letter to parishes. There are some copies on the
church table, and a copy on the noticeboard.

Come and be nourished this Lent as

through Mary’s journey of faith – a
journey that endured unthinkable
joys and sorrows and invites us to
examine where we say ‘yes’ to God
in our own lives. Judith is a New York Times

Abbiamo sborsato 25 cesti
e $1000 o più di aiuti nel Natale. Ci mancava $5000
I nostri
sette membri ringraziano i donatori del passato per
la loro generosità. Abbiamo sempre bisogno di nuovi
membri. (Telefonare a Brian 0413 416 766.)
AIUTANTI – FESTA DI SYDNEY ROAD!!
La Festa di Sydney Rd. si terrà Domenica 1 Marzo
dalle ore 12.00. Quest'anno, avremo una bancarella
di artigianato sulla strada e divertimenti
nel cortile della Chiesa. Ce bisogno di
aiutanti per vendere oggetti artigianali. È
un ottimo modo per incontrare altri
parrocchiani, oltre a godere la festa di
strada. Se si desidera aiutare, si prega di
aggiungere il nome e i dati di contatto
all'elenco sull tavolo della Chiesa.
