A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
CREATOR OF RECORDS:
Establishment and Initial Years
The N. Bugge Company was established in 1852 in Tønsberg, initially as a grocery store
and ship chandler. Niels Bugge, born in Våle in Vestfold County in 1823, started the
business in Nedre Langgt. 26, after serving as an apprentice with merchant Lars Johnsen
Dahl for several years.
Gradually he extended operations to include coal trading, shipping activities and sales of
cast-iron products from Ulefoss Jernverk ironworks and became a key shareholder in the
coastal steamer between Tønsberg, Horten and Christiania (now Oslo). He later owned
the best quayside in Tønsberg. Over time his business activities became increasingly
related to the sea. Already by 1856 he managed a vessel that ferried people migrating to
Quebec. In the years between 1870 and 1880, the company owned several vessels: Bai,
Thor, Telegraf, Talisman, Victor, Tønsberg, Aurora, Fridtjof, Robert and Vega.
Niels Bugge (1823- 1896)
After a while, Niels Bugge became involved various forms of activities in the Arctic
Ocean: sealing, whaling and the hunting of bottlenose dolphins from the White Sea to
Eastern Greenland. During the period 1880 to 1890, his primary activity was sealing with
the vessels Harald Haarfager and Hekla. Sealing with Hekla in the White Sea had to be
abandoned after protests from the Russian authorities in 1889. In 1891–92, the same
vessel was chartered to the Danish government for use in Eastern Greenland. This
expedition produced a rich plethora of scientific results. Hekla was sold to Johannes
Müller in Christiania in 1897.
Whaling in the Arctic Ocean
Niels Bugge’s brother-in-law Thorvald Henrik Dahl (b.1833) was already a wellestablished shipowner who owned eight vessels when he started the whaling company
Viktor in 1881. In 1883, Niels joined the firm. In 1889, Niels Bugge took over Viktor,
which for seven years had carried out whaling in Syltefjord on the Varanger peninsula. In
2
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
the same year, the whaling companies Viktor and Mjøfjord Hvalfangeri were merged.
The new company was called AS Viktor. Niels Bugge was the company’s general
manager, and Lauritz Berg was its manager. At the same time, whaling operations were
relocated from the coast of Finnmark to Dyrefjord in Island.
Family and the Shipping Company
Niels Bugge died in 1896. Together with Caroline Sophie Dahl Bugge (1828–1915),
daughter of merchant Lars Dahl, he had six sons: Lars Dahl (Bugge) (1860–67), Halfdan
Bugge (1862–1905), Carl Sophus Bugge (1864–1895), Niels Bugge (1866–67), Niels
Bugge (1868–1900) and Finn Bugge (1871–1958). The son Niels Bugge managed the
company until his death in 1900. Office manager Ditleff Levorsen was granted power of
procuration (authorisation) to carry on business until Finn took over after he had
completed his education in 1901. Ditleff Levorsen had been employed in the company
since 1868.
Finn Bugge studied to be an electrical engineer at Chalmer’s Technical College in
Gothenburg in Sweden and at Hannover Technical College in Germany. He worked for a
while in Germany in the company Elektrizität –Aktien Gesellschaft vorm W. Lahmeyer &
Co in Frankfurt am Main before taking over management of AS Klosterøens Mekaniske
og Elektriske Verksteder’s divisional office in Christiania. He joined the family business in
1901. Several years later he took over control of the business.
In 1901, Finn Bugge married Mary Jane Jewell (born in London 18 October 1873). They
had three children: 1) Maude Edle, b. 1902 and married to Director Rupert Trouton; 2)
Niels Ronald, b. 1905, shipowner and consul in Tønsberg, married to Elsa Bergengren
from Borås in Sweden; and 3) Finn Aubrey b. 1911, director, married to Grethe Olafsen,
Tønsberg. For many years Finn Bugge owned the island of Hvaløy off the coast of
Nøtterøy and the property Gimle at Nøtterøy.
Finn Bugge was a member of Tønsberg Town Council for several years and a board
member of several whaling companies: AS Tanktransport, Kaldnes mek. Verksted AS,
Tønsberg Harpunfabrik AS and Tønsberg og Oplands Bank. Bugge was also Portuguese
Vice Consul in Tønsberg.
Krogh-Hansen joins the company
The N. Bugge Company was general manager for and co-owner of several companies. In
1910, Finn Bugge entered into a form of lifelong cooperation with Hans Krogh-Hansen,
and together they established AS Kastor in 1911 (Akt– 1585). The company operated in
whaling areas in West Africa. That same year Hans Krogh-Hansen was initiated as a
partner of the N. Bugge Company and thus a joint general manager of the companies. In
1911, the N. Bugge Company acquired two-thirds of AS Tenvik Trankokeri (A–1587).
AS Hektor
In 1910 Finn Bugge started the whaling company AS Hektor (A–1582). The N. Bugge
Company was general manager, while Finn was the whaling company’s owner.
3
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
Shortly after its inception, AS Hektor was granted a whaling licence and the right to
establish a land-based station in Whalers Bay on Deception Island in the Antarctic. Great
Britain, which had claimed sovereignty over the South Shetland Islands, wanted to
regulate whaling through the issuing of permits and whaling licences. Together with its
licence and sole rights to establish a land-based station, AS Hektor was also granted a
licence to carry out whaling operations using a floating factory and whaling vessels in
British territorial waters.
In 1914, AS Hektor acquired AS Hvalen (A–1583), Sandefjord. This acquisition helped AS
Hektor to obtain more favourable whaling licences in the South Shetland Islands.
AS Hektor continued to catch whales around the South Shetland Islands until 1930/31.
As a result of the First World War, however, no expeditions were sent between the years
1915 and 1920. The floating factories were instead used to carry freight. Several ships
were torpedoed or sunk during the war. In 1930, the year the final expedition took
place, three floating factories and a total of 16 whaling vessels, two buoy boats and a
tanker sailed south to catch whales. There was a tremendous amount of optimism. In
the spring of 1931, however, the expedition returned home and the ships were
immediately laid up as a result of a slump in the market for whale oil.
In 1930, Niels Ronald Bugge (b. 1905), son of Finn Bugge, became co-owner of the
company together with Harald Krogh-Hansen. Harald Krogh-Hansen was the son of Hans
Krogh-Hansen. At the same time they both became general managers of AS Hektor.
Niels Ronald Bugge had studied social economics at Cambridge University after
graduating from upper secondary school, and began his career in the company by taking
part in an expedition to the Antarctic in 1929, the year before he became co-owner of
his father’s company.
Establishment of British Companies
Whaling licences in the South Shetland Islands were granted for a period of around 20
years, and the renegotiation of licences with the British authorities began at the end of
the 1920s. Circumstances had changed, however, and the British became more
restrictive as regards whaling licence, which called for a new strategy on the part of the
N. Bugge Company, and cooperation was sought with British partners. Collaboration
with Britain gave rise to unrest in Norwegian shipping circles, but for the N. Bugge
Company it was necessary to adapt to the market. The result was the establishment of
British companies and subsidiaries where they themselves were directors and/or general
managers. Agreements were entered into concerning the sale of production and the
establishment of companies for tax purposes.
In 1928, Hector Whaling Ltd. was founded in London. It was agreed that AS Hektor
would sell its whale oil to Hector Whaling Ltd. for a period of 20 years in return for
which Hector Whaling Ltd. would cover AS Hektor’s operating expenses. The first year of
operation in 1928/29 saw very good profits, and Hektor’s shareholders received a 40 per
4
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
cent dividend payment. The 1930/31 season was not a success, however. Hector
Whaling Ltd. was unable to sell the oil produced, and the company was consequently
unable to fulfil its obligations in respect of Hektor. The result of this was that Hector
Whaling Ltd. was granted a moratorium, i.e. a form of debt deferment in respect of both
AS Hektor and its own creditors (read more about this under the description of AS
Hektor; A–1582).
The N. Bugge Company played a role in forming United Whalers Ltd., London in 1935.
United Whalers Ltd. was a subsidiary of Hector Whaling Ltd., which in turn had a
majority shareholding in AS Hektor and Hektoria Ltd., London (A–1584). In connection
with the establishment of United Whalers, one managed, by means of a mortgage, to
build the floating factory Terje Viken and nine whaling vessels. The floating factoryt Terje
Viken, which was built at Deutsche Maskin & Schiffgebau, Bremen in 1936, was sunk by
the Germans during the Second World War. United Whalers Ltd. and Hector Whaling
Ltd., London merged in 1953, and all material was transferred at this point from Hector
Whaling Ltd. to United Whalers Ltd. Niels Ronald Bugge was director of Hektor Whaling
Ltd. and United Whalers Ltd. in London.
In 1940, the N. Bugge Company was dissolved and operations were continued in a
limited liability company under the name AS N. Bugge. With effect from the same date,
the company IS Bugge & Krogh-Hansen was established. The company took over all
whaling business that the N. Bugge Company had managed through the four owners –
Finn Bugge, N. R. Bugge, Consul H. Krogh-Hansen and Harald Krogh-Hansen – under the
name Bugge & Krogh-Hansen. In spite of its formal establishment in 1940, Bugge &
Krogh-Hansen had already from 1936 shifted from acting as general managers to agents
for other companies. The agreement between the parties was renegotiated in 1944, and
again in 1946 when Consul H. Krogh-Hansen passed away.
At the beginning of the Second World War, AS N. Bugge only owned a few whaling
vessels. These were used as freight carriers during the war, and as a consequence of the
war the company lost several of these vessels.
From Whaling to Shipping
The agreement between AS Hektor and Hektor Whaling Ltd. was terminated in 1946,
and in the post-war years AS Hektor’s primary focus was on shipping. AS N. Bugge
owned, together with AS Hektor, Hektoria and Benguela.
In 1947, Niels Ronald Bugge also become co-owner of the company Bugge & KroghHansen (A-1593), Tønsberg, which was involved in whaling and shipping (including the
Balaena expedition), and a large part of the Bugge Shipping Company’s operations after
the Second World War took place within the company Bugge & Krogh-Hansen.
In 1947, Niels Ronald Bugge established his own shipping company N.R. Bugge
Skipsaksjeselskap (A–1327), which was primarily involved in tanker operations.
5
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
Niels Ronald Bugge had many positions of office. Among other things, he was chairman
of the International Association of Whaling Companies, a member of the board of
Hvalfangstens Assuranceforening [the Whaling Companies’ Insurance Association] and
member of the board of representatives of AS Norske Alliance. From 1939 he was
Swedish Vice Consul in Tønsberg.
After Finn Bugge’s death in 1958, his son Niels Ronald became manager of the company.
Finn Bugge (1871 – 1958)
A Pioneer in the Supply Ship Service in the North Sea
As Norway withdrew from modern pelagic whaling at the end of the 1960s, the Bugge
shipping company was already seeking new roads. Oil operations had created the need
for a new form of cargo vessels, and from the 1970s onwards the company owned
Bugge Supply Ships with its ten or so offshore vessels responsible for supplying drilling
platforms. The first two supply vessels Sea Pearl and Sea Explorer were built in Houston,
Texas. AS N. Bugge owned the Bugge Supply Ships Group. At this time Finn Axel Bugge,
son of Niels Ronald Bugge and the grandson of Finn Bugge, was general manager of the
company. In 1978, Finn Axel Bugge moved to Singapore, and the company AS N. Bugge
was dissolved. A new company was established, however, AS N.R. Bugge, in which Finn
Axel Bugge served on the board of directors from the outset. Director Sven Gjeruldsen
was general manager.
AS N.R. Bugge was wound down in 2004 since the company no longer had revenues. The
winding-down process was part of the Bugge Group’s rationalisation process.

THE ARCHIVE:
The N. Bugge archive comprises 70 linear shelf metres and spans the period from 1827
to 2004. Only a few documents date from the time before the company was established
in 1852, however, and these relate mostly to real estate documentation and work
contracts. There a lacuna in several of the series.
The Case Records and Correspondence series (D–E) are the most comprehensive
sections, comprising a full 19 sub-series. Further, the archive contains some older vessel
documentation contained under series F, most of which relates to individual vessels. A
considerable amount of vessel documentation can also be found in the Insurance series
(G) and Average/Shipwreck series (H).
Information concerning crews can be found under series P. Since the N. Bugge
Company was responsible for hiring crews for several companies, this series also
contains crew-related documents pertaining to these companies’ ships. The Pab series
comprises crew cards in connection with Bugge & Krogh-Hansen’s role as agents for
others. Crew information may also be found in series H.
The archive’s accounts section consists of traditional accounting series, in which the
main ledger series is most complete. The accounting vouchers are comprehensive and
document both private and business matters and transactions.
The archive also consists of some sketches/drawings (T), both of houses, ships,
machinery and land-based stations.
The archive contains relatively few photographs, although there is some photographic
material that has yet to be registered. Some albums have been borrowed from Anne
Bugge and Tønsberg Sjømannsforening [Tønsberg Association of Seamen], respectively,
and have been digitised.
Since the Bugge Shipping Company’s operations cover several companies, and because
the company at times operated as an agent for other companies (crew hiring, outfitting
etc.), it may in some cases be necessary to obtain information from the archives for
these various companies. This primarily applies to the following creators of records:
 A–1582 - AS Hektor
 A–1583 - AS Hvalen
 A–1593 - IS Bugge & Krogh-Hansen
 A–1582 - Hektoria Ltd.
 A–1589 - AS Viktor
For example, documentation after 1917 relating to operations in the company AS
Hektor can be found in the N. Bugge archive (A–1326).
7
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
N. Bugge’s archive consists of the following series:
A – Governing Bodies, 1930–2004
This series consists of minutes of board meetings and general meetings from 1940 to
2004. In addition, the series contains two books of meetings relating to agreements
concerning AS Hektor and Hector Whaling Ltd.
B – Copy books, 1910–1916
The copy book series, consisting of copies of outgoing letters, only covers the years 1910
to 1916. Two of the copy books contain letters from Finn Bugge. Beyond the
aforementioned period, copies of outgoing letters can be found in the case and
correspondence series.
D – Main Correspondence, 1860–1966
This series is comprehensive and consists of 13 sub-series. With the exception of series
Dc, which is arranged by archive key, all correspondence is arranged in alphabetical
order within given periods.
Daa – Letters and Telegrams, 1860–1908
Correspondence before around 1870 is fragmentary. The series contains
correspondence with business contacts as well as private letters. A significant part of
these consist of letters between the family and Finn Bugge, while he was a student in
Hannover and Gothenburg, respectively. Offers from freight agents for the carrying of
goods, customer requests etc. This series also includes some vouchers.
Dab – Letters and Telegrams, 1905–1916
This series is arranged chronologically, and to some extent arranged in alphabetical
order by business contact. For each year there are separate files containing letters
addressed to Consul Finn Bugge, and also letters of a more private character. There is no
clear division in the correspondence between the N. Bugge Company, Finn Bugge and
matters relating to AS Hektor and AS Hvalen. The correspondence concerns, among
other things, the purchase and sale of vessels, purchases of coal and equipment as well
as various settlements and money transactions. Further, this series includes offers for
the purchase and sale of property and shares in various companies, questions
concerning employment and the hiring of crews etc.
Db – Correspondence – alphabetical, 1917–1950
This series is comprehensive with a total of seven sub-series (Dba–Dc). Each sub-series
represent a separate business function, either through the joint operation of several
companies, or as an agent or general manager. Within each sub-series correspondence
is arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by name.
8
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
E – Case Archive, 1911–1945
This series is divided into four sub-series. Series Ea contains matters concerning the
shipping company and general manager operations. Series Eb–Ed include
correspondence with whaling organisations and associations; Norges
Hvalfangerforening [The Norwegian Whalers’ Association], Hvalfangstens
Assuranceforening [The Whaling Insurance Association] and Salgskontoret for hvalolje
1933–1934 [The Sales Office for Whale Oil 1933–1934].
F – Vessel Documentation, 1885–1939
This series consists of three sub-series. The first sub-series Fa contains documentation
relating to individual vessels. These are ships in which N. Bugge was co-owner, and
which were used for freight or in connection with whaling. Some documentation
concerning individual vessels may be found in series Q. In addition, the N. Bugge
Company owned a number of ships that were also organised as separate companies.
See under series P for further information about these companies. Series Fb contains
offers from ship’s brokers, while series Fc deals with various forms of vessel
documentation, primarily from the 1920s and 1930s.
G – Insurance, 1905–1934
Insurance of vessels, cargoes and equipment etc. The series is arranged by season and
alphabetically by ship. In cases where the policy files span several years, the file will be
located under the final season. Policy files contain not only insurance policies but also
correspondence documenting the following: name of insurer, cover expiry date,
assessment of damages. The files contain different categories of insurance: e.g.
insurance of whale oil, whalebone, machinery parts, clothing and effects, whaling
equipment etc.
H – Average/Shipwreck, 1915–1936
This series, which is arranged by category of ship and then by the vessel’s name,
contains documents relating to insurance settlements and calculations of damages. In
addition, the series contains excerpts of journals and crew information as well as an
overview of crew member signings off etc.
J – Various Items concerning Production, 1934
This series deals with methods for preserving and utilizing whale meat.
K – Shares, 1918–1960
Share certificates, dividend coupons and a list of Finn and Mary Jane Bugge’s shares etc.
P – Personnel Management, 1842–1990
This series contains crew cards for the period 1910 until around 1990. This includes
employment and hiring contracts, personal papers concerning the Bugge family,
application, certificates and diplomas etc. Information about crews may also be found in
the AS Hektor archive (A–1582) and in the IS Bugge & Krogh-Hansen archive (A–1593).
9
A-1326 - N. Bugge AS
Crew lists are also available in connection with the individual ships: see the archives for
Sultan rederi (A–1776) Superior AS (A–1591), Aurora, partsrederi (A–1580) and Sverre
AS (A–1774). Crew information also exists under series H and series Rf (accounting
vouchers).
Q – Property Management, Fixtures and Fittings, 1827–1957
Contracts concerning purchases, sales and development of properties, purchases and
sales of ships, specification of costs, some personal contracts and agreements etc.
R – Accounts, 1852–1986
The accounts series is arranged in sub-series divided into ledgers, creditors and debtors,
coordinated bookkeeping, real property registration and accounting vouchers. In
addition, there is an Re series containing individual records relating to vessels, the
Kaldnes farm, coal purchases, a raw balance ledger, a status book and two auditing
ledgers. The accounts series is not complete.
T – Drawings and Maps, 1897–1956
This series primarily contains drawings of ships, equipment and areas (plan drawings).
U – Photographs and Films, 1890–1950
This archive contains a relatively small number of photographs. The photographic
evidence in existence documents the company’s management, building processes and
launches, ships and land-based stations. There are also photographs taken in connection
with the Wilkin-Hearst expedition at the end of the 1920s. The aim of this expedition
was to map the Antarctic peninsula, and the expedition was granted permission by N.
Bugge to use Deception Island as a base and landing place. Some of the photographs
have yet to be registered. The films have not yet been arranged and registered.
