Classwork - individual
Review of the shortfilms - Meals ready
- The other pair



Theme - Both films mainly dealt with class differences and how economic backgrounds affect
humans' attitude towards eachother. In first video both kids have a problem with one of their
footwears, for rich kid one shoe is not clean enough and for poor kid it's broken, both fiddle with
it lose it.
In second video everyone silently mistreats the old man deeming him unworthy of even
words, the owner only communicates in glares. Sad part is everyone is middle class but insult the
old man just because he is poor. They would have been more thoughtful towards a rich person.
Communication
The rich kid's gratefulness for his new shoes is shown by him wiping them constantly
with cloth. He is not taking them for granted, and cares for them. The poor kid tries to hand the
shoe safely knowing it's value but only throws it as a last attempt. The rich kid wants his shoe
back but instead throws the one he has towards the poor kid (and not just throw it on platform to
convey he is happily giving it) so at least one of them can wear the pair, as only one shoe would
be useless to both, which shows his rational thinking void of pettiness for losing his new shoes.
The old man gets a portion of meal in exchange of standing with the "meals ready" sign.
The irony is he is inviting people to eat in order to calm his own hunger. The restraunt owner is
being rude to him just because he has some authority over him, It wouldn't have taken much to
share his water, something we don't even deny strangers. The entitled customers are wasting the
water instead of offering it to him.
Symbols
 footwear is used to indicate economic class, rich kid had new polished boots, poor kid had
broken slipper, old man was so poor he was barefoot ,
 the poor kid wanted to keep the shoe but he changes his mind when he sees the train is
leaving.
 for the rich old man even though he has a walker, his family is supporting him till he sits in
shade, whereas poor old man is alone standing in sun
 He feels as helpless as that dog
 old man picks up the rudely thrown water bottle and drinks it showing his desperation
 Many cars come, people eat food and go but his life is still stuck on standing there alone,
thirsty, hungry.
 Chocolate is a luxury the kid can afford to give it away just because she wants to as she is
too young to understand poor and rich.
 The old man's wife gives her piece of chicken to him acknowledging his effort to earn the
food and showing how he deserves a little bit more
 Even in poor conditions, they share their food with the cat, a task they don't have to take on
but do it just because.

Simmilarities between both videos
Both videos showed how economic backgorund can affect the behavior of people. For
example the poor boy and the old man wanted something that they couldn't have, they struggle
with accepting that reality, but once they do and lose hope the unthinkable happens and the poor
boy gets the pair of shoes he envied; Old man gets water - albeit only some - and the chocolate he
didn't expect.
Adults are usually unforgiving in power of authority but kids are unbothered by
materialistic things like money and class. The girl gave her chocolate and the rich boy,
understanding there's no use of one shoe, threw it so that at least the poor kid can enjoy wearing
them. 
