Third: Answer the Follwing.(2 Marks)
1. Define input and input devices.
Input is any data or instructions that are used by a computer; you provide input
whenever you use system or application programs.
2
Input devices are hardware used to translate words, numbers, sounds, images,
and gestures that people understand into a form that they system unit can
process.
2. Describe the different types of keyboard, pointing, scanning, image capturing,
and audio-input devices.
A keyboard is the most common way to input data; there are a variety of
keyboard designs including traditional keyboards, laptop keyboards, virtual
keyboards, and thumb keyboards.
Pointing devices are used to provide an intuitive interface with the system unit by
accepting physical movements or gestures (pointing); there is a variety of
different pointing devices such as the mouse, touch screens, game controllers,
and a stylus.
Scanning devices are used to convert scanned text and images into a form for the
system unit to process; there are only five types of scanning devices such as,
optical scanners, care readers, RFID readers, bar code readers, and character and
mark recognition devices.
Image Capturing Devices create/capture original images; these devices include
digital cameras and webcams.
Audio-Input Devices convert sounds into a form that can be processed by the
system unit; this device only contains voice recognition systems.
3. Describe output and output devices.
Output is processed data/information that usually takes the form of text,
graphics, photos, audio, and video.
Output devices is hardware that is used to provide/create output; which
translates information that has been processed by a system unit into a form that
humans can understand. These devices most commonly used are monitors,
printers, and audio-output devices.
4. Describe the features and different types of monitors and printers.
3
The most important feature of a monitor is the quality of the displayed images.
There are three categories of monitors and they include; flat panel monitors, Ebook readers, and other monitors that are used for specialized applications.
Printers are used to translate processed information for a system unit onto
paper. The most important features of a printer is resolution, color capability,
speed, memory and duplex printing. The different types of printers are inkjet
printers, laser printers, 3-D printers, and other printers that include cloud
printers, thermal printers, and plotters.

5. Describe audio and video devices including Bluetooth technology.
Audio and video devices are used to translate audio information from a computer
into sounds that humans can understand. The most used audio-video devices are
speakers and headsets.
Bluetooth technology are wireless connections that require a Bluetooth-enabled
speakers/headsets which translate audio information without any wires.
6. Discuss combination input and output devices, including multifunctional
devices, Internet telephones, and virtual reality headgear and gloves.
The combination of input and output devices are used to save space. The most
common combination devices include multifunctional devices, Internet
telephones, and virtual reality headgear and gloves.
Multifunctional devices usually combine the capabilities of a scanner, printer, fax,
and copy machines. These devices are most used in a home and small business
offices.
Internet telephones are specialized input/output devices used for receiving and
sending voice communication.
Virtual reality headgear and gloves are used to create a virtual experience.
7. Define ergonomics, and describe ways to minimize physical discomfort, and
discuss design issues with portable computers.
Ergonomics is the study of human factors related to things people use; used to
avoid health risks. Recommendations to minimize physical discomfort include
take a 15-minute break every hour or two, to make sure your equipment is
adjustable, and to use an ergonomic keyboard that have been developed to
prevent injury from heavy computer use. Laptops have design issues with the
keyboard because you are not able to adjust it, tablets have a design issue with
the keyboard because most are virtual or laid flat on a table, and smartphones
also have design issues with the keyboard because the thumbs are on a tiny
keyboard.
