Introduction
Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendranath
Datta on 12 January 1863, was an Indian
Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious
teacher, and the chief disciple of the Indian
mystic Ramakrishna. He played a key role in
introducing the Indian philosophies of
Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.
Vivekananda was born into an aristocratic Bengali
Kayastha family in Calcutta (now Kolkata), and from
a young age, he was inclined towards religion and
spirituality. He later found his guru, Ramakrishna,
and became a monk. After Ramakrishna’s death,
Vivekananda toured the Indian subcontinent
extensively, gaining first-hand knowledge of the
living conditions of the Indian people.

Early Education
Swami Vivekananda, originally named
Narendranath Datta, was born on
January 12, 1863, in Calcutta (now
Kolkata), British India. He was one of
the eight children of Vishwanath Datta
and Bhuvaneshwari Devi. His family
belonged to the upper-middle-class
Kayastha (scribes) caste in Bengal.
Vivekananda completed his early education
at the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Institution.
Graduation
He later attended the Presidency College in
Calcutta (now Kolkata).
1881
He met Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in 1881 &
was deeply inspired by his teachings & beliefs.
