Narrative/ Story Structure
Exposition: This is where the setting, characters, and background information are introduced. It sets the stage
for the story.
Inciting Incident: This is the event that sets the main conflict of the story in motion. It's the moment when
something changes for the protagonist, prompting them to take action.
Rising Action: This part of the story involves a series of events that build tension and develop the conflict. It
includes obstacles, challenges, and complications that the protagonist faces as they try to resolve the conflict.
Climax: This is the turning point of the story, where the tension reaches its peak. It's the moment of greatest
conflict and decision-making for the protagonist.
Falling Action: Following the climax, the story begins to wind down. Loose ends are tied up, and the
consequences of the climax are dealt with.
Resolution (or Denouement): This is the conclusion of the story, where the conflict is resolved, and any
remaining questions are answered. It provides closure for the reader.
Here's a simple example using the plot structure:
Exposition: Sarah is a young girl who lives in a small village surrounded by forests. She loves exploring the
woods with her dog, Max.
Inciting Incident: One day, while exploring the forest, Sarah discovers a mysterious old map hidden in a
tree hollow.
Rising Action: Sarah becomes determined to follow the map and uncover its secrets. Along the way, she
encounters obstacles like wild animals, treacherous terrain, and rival treasure hunters.
Climax: After a perilous journey, Sarah finally reaches the spot marked on the map. However, she discovers
that the treasure is not gold or jewels but a hidden cave filled with ancient artifacts and clues to her village's
history.
Falling Action: Sarah realizes that the real treasure was the knowledge she gained and the friendships she
formed along the way. She decides to share her discoveries with her community.
Resolution: Sarah returns home, where she is celebrated as a hero for her bravery and ingenuity. She feels
fulfilled knowing that she has made a difference in her village and forged lasting bonds with her friends.
