Mixtures are made of two or more different elements or compounds physically combined.
Mixtures can be separated into their parts by physical means.
I. Objective: Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds
II. Materials: student worksheet, scissor, paste
III. Procedure:
1. Prepare all the materials needed.
2. Cut the set of symbol cards in the worksheet.
3. Sort the cards into two groups based on the symbols shown.
4. Create a “rule” in grouping the symbol cards.
5. Label the symbol cards as “Elements” and “Compounds”. The teacher will
guide you in properly sorting the symbol cards.
6. Paste the correct sorted cards on the worksheet labelled as “Elements” and
“Compounds”.
7. Write your own definition of elements and compounds based on the rule
you used.
Elements (your own definition):
Compounds (your own definition):
8. Repeat procedure 2-6 using formula cards.
9. Fill out the Matter Flowchart based on the symbol and formula card and
labels.
IV. Guide questions:
1. How did you decide how to organize your symbol cards?
2. What makes elements different than compounds?
3. Are there any cards that are giving you more difficulties? Why?
