What is the skeletal system?
An adult human body has 206 bones. Together, all of these bones are known
as the skeletal system.
Functions of the Skeletal
System
The skeletal system is very important and has many functions. Some of these
functions are:

It supports the body: The skeletal system works as a support structure
for the body. It also helps to give the body its shape.

It helps us to move: Muscles attached to our bones help us to move
when they contract or relax. This is how we are able to walk, jump and
move in the many ways that we can. Our skeleton helps us to move our
bodies.

It protects our internal organs: The skeletal system helps keep our
internal organs safe from injury. The heart and lungs are protected by
the ribcage. The brain is protected by the cranium. The spinal cord is
protected by the spinal column or backbone.

It produces blood cells: Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
are all made in our bones.

It stores minerals: Important minerals such as calcium and potassium
are stored in our bones. They are released into the blood when they are
needed.
