Corruption: Its causes and
prevention
The world is developing day by day, but there are many issues worldwide
that are being an obstacle to the development of the world. One of the
main issues that is hindering this development is corruption.
So, what is corruption? Corruption is the misuse of the given power for
personal gains. Corruption is also being a cause of many other major issues
worldwide. It can make a country’s democratic power weak. Corruption
hinders a country’s economic growth.
Corruption is seen more in countries which have weak governance, weak
security, and weak anti-corruption policies. It is seen in organizations that
have weak policies, security, and maintenance. It is usually done by higher
officials, administrators, and members of the organization/government.
There are many forms of corruption; bribery, embezzlement, money
laundering, theft, nepotism, under-the-table transactions, fraud, and
extortion.
Corruption happens due to many factors, such as; greed for desire, higher
market and political monopolization, low/weak democracy, and higher
levels of bureaucracy etc.
People involve themselves in corruption in many ways. Some people pay
bribes to others to act in their favor. Officials and administrators in an
organization/government may take advantage of their position and power
to steal assets and funds from the organization/government. Fraudsters
deceive others to secure unfair gains. Some people may take advantage of
their power to employ close relatives and family members to a good job or
give them advantages unfairly, which is nepotism. Some people may take
others' belongings illegally. This is how some people involve themselves in
corruption.
However, there are ways that can be followed to prevent corruption. The
government of a country should enact laws and policies on anti-corruption.
Awareness should be spread among the people of a country on
anti-corruption. An organization should strengthen their security and
privacy to prevent corruption. The government should strengthen their
governance, and ensure security by enacting strict laws. This way we can
ensure a safe and a corruption-free country, eliminating corruption.
