This document is one of a four tracing the lineage of Robert E. Duncan through the Duncan,
Ohmen, Ware, and Goodwin relatives. The digital search is available on Ancestry.com under
“REDUNCAN91”.
The Ohmen search, contained herein, is challenging. The discovery and tracing of Ohmen family
members prior to their immigration from Prussia in the early 1800s has proven difficult due to no
central document repository in German, translation challenges in documentation, and name
spelling differences between peoples’ names while in Prussia and names adopted by them after
they immigrated to the United States or Canada.
Prussia BackgroundThe Kingdom of Prussia (German: Königreich
Preußen) was a kingdom that constituted the
state of Prussia between 1701 and 1918 and
included parts of present-day Germany,
Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Denmark, Belgium
and the Czech Republic. It was the driving
force behind the unification of Germany in
1871 and was the leading state of the German
Empire until its dissolution in 1918. Although
it took its name from the region called Prussia,
it was based in the Margraviate of
Brandenburg, where its capital was Berlin.
The kings of Prussia were from the House of
Hohenzollern. Prussia was a great power from
Figure 1- The Kingdom of Prussia (dark red) at its greatest
the time it became a kingdom, through its extent, after the de facto incorporation of Saxe-Lauenburg in
predecessor, Brandenburg-Prussia,
which 1866.
became a military power under Frederick
William, known as "The Great Elector". Prussia continued its rise to power under the guidance
of Frederick II, more commonly known as Frederick the Great, the third son of Frederick William
I. Frederick the Great was instrumental in starting the Seven Years' War, holding his own against
Austria, Russia, France and Sweden and establishing Prussia’s role in the German states, as well
as establishing the country as a European great power. After the might of Prussia was revealed it
was considered as a major power among the German states. Throughout the next hundred years
Prussia went on to win many battles, and many wars. It was because of its power that Prussia
continuously tried to unify all the German states under its rule.

After the Napoleonic Wars led to the creation of the German Confederation, the issue of more
closely unifying the many German states caused revolution throughout the German states, with
each wanting their own constitution. Attempts at creation of a federation remained unsuccessful
and the German Confederation collapsed in 1866 when war ensued between its two most powerful
member states, Prussia and Austria. The North German Confederation which lasted from 1867–
1871, created a closer union between the Prussian-aligned states while Austria and most of
Southern Germany remained independent. The North German Confederation was seen as more of
an alliance of military strength in the aftermath of the Austro-Prussian War but many of its laws
were later used in the German Empire. The German Empire lasted from 1871–1918 with the
successful unification of all the German states under Prussian hegemony. This was due to the
defeat of Napoleon III in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. The war united all the German
states against a common enemy, and with the victory came an overwhelming wave of nationalism
which changed the opinions of some of those who had been against unification. In 1871, Germany
unified into a single country, minus Austria and Switzerland, with Prussia the dominant power.
Prussia is considered the legal predecessor of the unified German Reich (1871–1945) and as such
a direct ancestor of today's Federal Republic of Germany. The formal abolition of Prussia, carried
out on 25 February 1947 by the fiat of the Allied Control Council referred to an alleged tradition
of the kingdom as a bearer of militarism and reaction, and made way for the current setup of the
German states.
Prussia Immigrations 1683 to 1820- Emigrants left Germany and migrated to Southeastern Europe, North America,
Russia, England, Scotland, and Ireland. This wave of emigration was caused by economic
hardships and religious persecutions after the Thirty Years' War. Many of these emigrants were
Protestants from Southwestern Germany, primarily the Rheinland, Westfalen, Hessen, Baden,
Württemberg, and Elsaß-Lothringen.
1820 to 1871- This wave of emigration was caused chiefly by economic hardships, including
unemployment and crop failures. Many Germans also left to avoid wars and military service. In
some cases, government entities encouraged poor citizens to emigrate. William Frederick Ohmen
immigrated to the United States with his wife during this period in 1858.
1871 to 1914- The number of emigrants increased dramatically during this time period. Emigration
had become more affordable while political and economic problems continued. Emigrants came
from all areas of Germany, including large numbers from the eastern provinces of Preußen
[Prussia]. Emigrants included not only ethnic Germans but also Poles and Jews
1914 to 1945- Even though the quota system reduced German emigration to the U.S. significantly,
it did not stop entirely. Emigrants included political dissenters, Jews, and others who were
uncomfortable with post World War I developments.

WILLIAM FREDERICK OHMEN, January 1832- 1919
The earliest Ohmen ancestor I can trace with high certainty is William
Frederick Ohmen (January 1832- 1919). William Frederick Ohmen’s real
name appears to have been Frederick William Ohmen, as attested to by
the name on his grave stone; however, in all US records he appears to
have used William Frederick Ohmen.
William F. Ohmen was born in Prussia (Germany). His birth date is
gleaned from his inputs to the 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 Census and Figure 2- William Frederick
recorded as 1832 (with one record showing 1833). The most detailed Ohmen
accounting of William is in the 1900 US Census which states his birth as
occurring in January 1832; this I have accepted even knowing this may have been a generalization
on his part simply to fill in the Census document.
German records are fragmented, hard to obtain, and difficult to read,
but the Hannover, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, &
Burials, 1684- 1892 records a “Friedrick Wm Ohmann”, to be born on
2/22/1831, and baptized 2/27/1831 in Westbarthausen, Westfalen,
Deutschland to Daniel Ohmann and “Wmine Marg Ohmann”. This
may be the true birth and ancestry of William, however, given the spelling of the last name -which
is different from any US records in which William is mentioned- and the fact that I can find no
further confirmation of this being the correct William, I have elected to go with William’s input
from the Census of January 1832 as his birth.
William married Wilhelmina Caroline Schmitz in 18571, immigrated to the United States in 18582,
and on 1/20/1864 enlisted in the United States Army, Company B, 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment.
A little over a year later, he was discharged from the army due to an unspecified disability on
5/22/1865.
On 9/24/1868 he was approved for, US citizenship, spending the rest of his life as a farmer and
dying in 1919. He is buried in Northview Cemetery, New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut where
he had lived almost all of his life while in the Untied States.
See Appendices for supporting information.

United States 1900 Census information. The 1910 Census states William’s immigration date as 1840. This date
appear in error as it conflicts will previous Census information provided by him on his immigration and does not align
with other life events.

CAROLINE WILHELMINA SCHMITZ, 11/3/1836- 12/7/1907
William’s wife, Caroline Wilhelmina Schmidt (called Wilhelmine Caroline
Schmitz in the US) married William Frederick Ohmen in 1857 and
immigrating with him in 18583 to the United States.
Wilhelmine’s birth date is listed in the various US Census as June 1836;
however, there is, within the German Select Births & Baptisms, 1558-1898
two Caroline Wilhelmina Schmitz.
Figure 3- Caroline
Wilhelmina, Schmitz
One is born to Richard Schmitz and Helene Buehler on 10/27/1836 in Elberfeld, Rhineland,
Germany; however: this does not align with the birth dates given by Wilhelmina in the various US
Census- although admittedly census are notoriously inaccurate on dates- and, more telling in the
1880 Census she lists her father as Frederick Schmidt, 82, who was living with her and William.
As this does not align with her father’s name or birth in the German Select Births & Baptisms,
1558-1898, I have elected not to view this as the Caroline Wilhelmina Schmitz married to William.
The second Wilhelmine Caroline Schmitz was born to Johann Friedrich Schmitz and Wilhelmine
Laurenz on 11/3/1836 and was baptized on 11/22/1836 in Evangelisch, Schwelm, Westfalen,
Prussia. Due to the information on hand for her father and birth date, I believe this to be the correct
Wilhelmina and have used this birth date.
Wilhelmine’s death date is taken from the probate of her will which states her death as 12/7/1907,
with the will being proved by the court on 4/22/1907. Caroline lived most, if not all, of her life in
the United States in Litchfield County, Connecticut and was buried upon her death in New Milford,
Connecticut at the Northville Cemetery where her husband was also buried.

Children and Grandchildren Specifics1. Frederick William Ohmen, 12/25/1857- 1939
Frederick and Sarah B. Dougall (12/1867- 12/20/1953)4 were married on April
1881 and one year later in April 1882, their first child Fannie (who was named
after Sarah’s mother) was born. When Sarah was married to Frederick he was
23 and she was but 13. While Sarah’s father did not approve of the marriage
Sarah and Frederick lived together as husband and wife until sometime after
19195 and had 10 children.
When the next census was taken in 1920, Sarah was living with her daughter
Ida and Ida’s husband, Oscar Johnson, in Connecticut.
Sarah was
approximately 50 at this time and never went back to living with her husband.
In the 1940 US Census Sarah was living with Hilda Ohmen (her daughter),
Hilda’s husband Francis Walsh, and Ruth M. Ohmen, another daughter.
Figure 4- Frederick
William Ohmen
Figure 5 Sarah B.
Dougal
When Ida and Oscar, her husband, moved to Fairlawn, New Jersey, Sarah went
to live with her daughter Hilda, and for the rest of her life, Sarah lived most of the time with Hilda,
sometimes visiting with Ida, or Leon.
Family lore states Fannie, Lillian, William, Frederick, and Hilda did not have children. Ida had
13 children, Grace had 4, Ruth had one son, and Leon had three children.
Sarah is listed as “Sarah V.” and “Sarah B.” throughout her records and census. Also Sarah’s last name has appeared
in some documents as McDougall.
5
When Sarah and Frederick separated, her youngest son Leon William (born in 1905) went to live with Frederick and
was 14 years old at that time according to family lore, thus placing their separation date as approximately 1919.

Nancy Grace Ohmen is listed in the 1900 US Census as Nancy G. Ohmen but thereafter is listed in numerous
documents (including the 1910 US Census) as Grace N. Ohmen. In addition, due to her marriage to Frank Sparro, the
US Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 lists her as: Grace Sparro; SSN 049-20-7812; Last residence: Orlando,
32807, Orange, Florida, USA; Born: 14 Mar 1894; Died: Feb 1981; State SSN Issued: Connecticut. The Florida
Death Index, 1877-1998 on the other hand lists her as Louise Grace Sparro, born 14 March 1894 and died on 5
February 1981 in Orange, Florida.
33
Married to Grace Nancy in Coventry on 6/16/1912, Grace was living with John in 1940 but living with Frank
Sparro in 1949.
34
Information on Grace’s husband Frank Sparro is largely missing; however, the St Petersburg, Florida, City
Directory, 1949 shows Grace L Sparro and Frank Sparro living at 2816 13th Lane, St Petersburg, Florida.
35
Birth date is from 1920 US Census. Both he and Dorothy were living with Fannie V. Ohmen, Nancy’s sister, and
her husband Phillip Heft in 1920. In the 1940 US Census he and his wife Virginia were living with Hilda Ohmen and
her husband Francis Walsh, Sarah V. Ohmen, and Ruth M. Ohmen.
36
Ruth was married to her first husband, Homer C. Bradbury, at 16 years of age, or, in about 1914 and had a son,
Wilmer, in 1915. I can find no marriage certificate for her and Bradbury, but she was divorced from him on 4/23/1920
in Hartford, Connecticut. She then married Harry F. Burdick on 8/31/1920 in Orange, NY where she was a vocalist
living at the White US Hotel in Nelliston, NY where Harry was the hotel manager. Ruth divorced Harry on 3/3/1930
and the 1930 census shows her living with her sister Sarah Quinn (aka Sadie), and her son in Richmond, Virginia
where the women were managing a beauty shop in a hotel. The 1940 Census shows Ruth returned to Fair Lawn, NJ,
and was living with her sister Hilda (aka Huldah or Helda) and her husband, Francis Walsh under her maiden name
and was working as a beautician. After 1940, there is little information discoverable on Ruth. Definitive death
information for Ruth is scarce even though a number of Ruth M. Burdick deaths are recorded around the country, but
not in New Jersey. I have elected to go with the death of Ruth under the name Ruth Burdick in Jackson County,

Hilda was married to George Drobeck on 1/3/1927 in New York. In the 1930 US Census she is listed as living in
Hawthorne, Passaic, New Jersey with Sarah “B” Ohmen (her mother and 62 years old), and her brother Leon William

According to the 1900 US Census, Anna Maria Zeiner was born in German and immigrated to the United States in
1871, marrying Louis Herman Ohmen in 1884. Within the Connecticut, Hale Collection Of Cemetery Inscriptions &
Newspqper Notices, 1629- 1934 and the Connecticut, Deaths and Burials Index, 1650-1934, “Zeiner Anna Ohmen”
is listed as being born in 1865 and died in 1913 in New Milford, Connecticut. This clearly conflicts with all other
documentation to include the US Find A Grave Index, 1600s- Present and Anna’s gravestone which shows a birth date
of January 1863 and death date of 8/2/1931. I have elected to codify the latter.
41
Franklin A. Stone married Louise around 1/9/1900 when she was 15 years old, and he was 21 in New Milford,
Connecticut. The marriage was opposed by her father, however, she and Franklin had 3 children.
42
Louise was married to Michael George Hogan (who went by Michael) around January, 1920; although, Michael is
not listed as living with Louise and the children in the 1920 census and she is listed as head of household, she is listed
as married, and subsequently in the 1930 census is listed as living with Michael.
43
Louise was married to Harry L. Sniffen between the 1930 US Census and 1940 US Census.
44
George H Wooding married Louis in1956. Wooding had been previously married to Frances Ida Wooding

5. Augusta Marie Ohmen, 1869-11/21/1936
Augusta is well accounted for in the census from birth through 1930. She appears to
have lived at home until the death of her father in 1919. In 1920 at 50 years old she
was a single female house keeper, and in 1930 at 60 years old, was a boarder in New
Milford, Connecticut. There is no documentation of her ever having been married.

Of note: Augusta’s mother left all children, except Augusta, $5.00 in her will. To
Augusta
Augusta she left “…the rest and residue of my estate…including the undivided half
