The use of chat GPT, writing a memo.

To use or not to use, that is the question.
You are the CEO of a nutrition and natural health company, Holistic Vitas. It is a national
supplier and stocked in over 1300 stores across the country. Your company is known for
convenient vitamin mixes branded as “Vitas.” Without your consent, a medicine DNA company
called Genomex tested vitamin capsules from 10 of your Vitas product lines. The DNA results
found numerous other biomaterials in a single pill. For example, the tested Vitas D Mix capsule
had traces of walnuts, horsehair, orange peel, and more. Such ingredients raise concerns about
allergies, sanitary standards, and overall human health. However, shortly after the results were
released, investigative journalists reported that the technology used by Genomex is a pilot
project, implying that the results may be inaccurate. The media coverage around this complex
situation is confusing, and there are many differing perspectives. Customers and retailers alike
are enraged, and even the staff at Holistic Vitas cannot discern whether the claims are true. While
waiting for an accurate testing of the different Vita Lines currently in production and on sale, you
are expected to recall all the currentstock and provide a public message addressing public health
concerns. Your company’s credibility is at stake. As CEO of Holistic Vitas, draft a recall Memo
to retailers, consumers, and the public that includes an explanation of the events and addresses
the accusations
Subject: Urgent Recall Notice: Holistic Vitas Product Lines
Dear Valued Retailers, Consumers, and the Public,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to address a matter of utmost importance that
has recently come to our attention at Holistic Vitas, the CEO of the company. We take our
commitment to your health and well-being seriously, and it is with a heavy heart that I inform
you about the need for an immediate recall of our current stock.
Recently, our vitamin mixes, branded as "Vitas," underwent testing by a medicine DNA company
called Genomex. The results from this test indicated the presence of numerous unexpected
biomaterials in some of our products, including but not limited to walnuts, horsehair, and orange
peel. We understand that such findings raise significant concerns about allergies, sanitary
standards, and overall human health.
However, it is crucial to note that the technology employed by Genomex for this testing is
currently a pilot project. Subsequent investigative journalism has raised doubts about the
accuracy of these results, highlighting the need for further validation. We are committed to
conducting thorough and independent testing of our Vita Lines currently in production and on
sale to ensure accurate and reliable results.
In the interim, and in the interest of public health and transparency, we have decided to recall all
our current stock from the 1300 stores across the country. We take this precautionary measure to
address any potential risks and to reaffirm our commitment to the safety and trust of our valued
customers.
Our company has always prioritized quality, transparency, and integrity in every aspect of our
operations. We are currently working closely with accredited laboratories to conduct additional
testing on our Vita Lines. We will share the verified results with you as soon as they become
available.
We understand the confusion and concern surrounding this situation, and we deeply regret any
distress it may have caused. We assure you that we are taking swift and decisive action to resolve
this matter and maintain the high standards we have set for ourselves.
Holistic Vitas remains dedicated to providing you with premium-quality, natural health products.
We appreciate your understanding and patience during this challenging time.

In class, we talked about the efficiency and the quality of generative AI’s output. On the
efficiency/quantity side, gen AI can write hundreds of words in a few seconds, saving the users
many hours of writing and thinking. However, on the quality side, gen AI’s output is mediocre at
best. Its output to a prompt is the most common answer from the database used to build that AI.
Graphically, that would be the median of a bell-shaped distribution, the 50 percentile, the most
common and average answer. The nature of gen AI raises a problem. If used extensively, gen AI
can reinforce current biases and misinformation. Because these biases and misinformation are
commonly held, they will most likely appear on gen AI’s output to a corresponding input,
spreading and promoting biases, and ultimately forming a self-reinforcing cycle. The discussion
above is related to complex problems like a math problem, an ethical question. Where answers
can go in different directions with varying quality. However, if you ask Chat GPT very basic
questions like historical dates or the property of a chemical substance, you can expect an
accurate and error free answer.
Another issue with Chat GPT is how fast and easy you can get an answer with it. You take less
than a minute to type in your prompt, and it solves your problem in a few seconds, the problem
would take you much more time otherwise. Because people like to take shortcuts and usually
don’t like mental work, they will use chat GPT frequently. However, the answers we get from
chat GPT are mediocre. This is analogous to automatic and intuitive thinking where the
minimum effort leads to an average result. The way chat GPT gives the answer is especially
similar to how automatic thinking works. Chat GPT gives the median, the most frequently
occurring answer in the database. While the automatic brain extracts from our past experiences
and habits, the most frequent occurrence from our database. Both require low effort from us. On
that note, we can maybe project the idea of automatic thinking to our use of gen AI. It is
recommended to use the automatic system when the stakes are low. Then we should only use gen
AI when the stakes are low and be more careful and thoughtful when the stakes are high.
For this assignment, I copied and pasted the prompt as it is. Compared to my memo, chat GPT’s
output is more professional and uses a richer vocabulary. And surprisingly it is not robotic, at
least I can’t feel it. Even though I cannot see the difference between chat GPT’s output and the
output of a good writer, maybe a skillful reader can spot the difference. It becomes a problem
when the readers realize that they are communicating with a bot, which is different from the old
human to human communication method. This disjunction might make the readers feel less
important to the writer. And ultimately, communicating with AI generated memo (or other
writings) might harm the credibility of the writer.
