Energy Drinks – What You Don’t Know
In the US energy drinks are marketed to many students who may need to stay awake
during class or study. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not approve of
energy drinks. The best way to feel energetic remains eating healthy foods, regular
physical activity, and getting enough sleep.
Common Ingredients
Caffeine - a chemical compound that stimulates the central nervous system. Caffeine
in large amounts may cause headaches, sleeplessness or tremors. Both caffeine and
alcohol are diuretics; combining the two may lead to dehydration.
Page
3
Sugar - the same thing as sucrose, glucose or fructose. Sugar is known to give an
instant boost but after very little time will cause a crash in both energy and alertness.
Additionally, sugar has 4 calories per gram, a 8.3 ounce Red Bull has 27 grams of
sugar; that’s 108 non‐nutritional calories!

Ginseng - an extract made from the root of the ginseng plant. The amount of ginseng
in most drinks is minimal and therefore harmful effects are unlikely, but check with
your doctor first if you are taking any medications.
Taurine - one of the most abundant amino acids in the brain, it acts as a
neurotransmitter that allows cells to communicate with one another. Scientists believe
taurine behaves more like a sedative than a stimulant. Taurine is safe in small doses,
but currently there is little research on taurine consumption in humans.
How To Stay Energized Naturally?
BREAKFAST. A balanced breakfast of carbohydrate, protein and fat causes a more
gradual release of energy over the entire morning and delays hunger.

SOY. Compared with other beans, soybeans are a rich source of protein that contains
as much complete protein as meat. Soybeans are a good source of essential fatty
acids, including some omega‐3s.
GREEN TEA. This hot drink aids in stress reduction and promotes mental
alertness. Green tea also contains polyphenols that may help lower risks for some
diseases. Remember tea contains caffeine, so look for a decaffeinated version or
monitor the number of cups consumed.
WATER aids in physical performance and prevents muscle cramps.

short time.
B. It may result in the loss of water in the body if it is consumed
with alcohol.

18. Ginseng
D. It can help people to be more attentive but it’s better not to
consume a lot of it.

20. Soy
F. It has a relaxing effect and its small doses are harmless.

Found on England’s Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, Stonehenge is a huge man-made
circle of standing stones. Built over many hundreds of years, it’s one of the world’s
most famous prehistoric monuments. And one of its biggest mysteries, too!
Work started on this super stone circle around 5,000 years ago in the late Neolithic
Age – but it took over 1,000 years to build, in four long stages! Archaeologists believe
the final changes were made around 1,500BC, in the early Bronze Age.
If you visit Stonehenge today, you’ll see many of the enormous stones still standing
strong in a circular arrangement. Archaeological research shows that the structure of
this amazing monument changed over time, as it was built and rebuilt by generations
of ancient peoples.
How was Stonehenge built? It’s a question that has baffled people for centuries – and
even to this day, no theory has been proven! How could people thousands of years
ago have transported and arranged such colossal stones?
A legend from the 12th century claimed giants placed the monument on a mountain
in Ireland, before a wizard named Merlin magically moved the stone circle to England.

A 430-metre-long glass bridge has been constructed across a deep canyon in China's
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Designed by architect Haim Dotan from Israel, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass
Bridge is believed to be the world's longest and tallest glass pedestrian bridge.
Steel beams support the structural glass panels, which Dotan used to make the bridge
"invisible".

"The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge was designed to be as invisible as possible – a white
bridge disappearing into the clouds," said Dotan. "As the designer of this bridge
located in an incredible and magical national park, I believe in nature, harmony,
balance and beauty," he added. "Nature is beautiful. One wants to make the least
impact upon it."
The bridge is capable of holding up to 800 people at any one time and has already
been used as the launch point for the world's highest bungee jump, said the architect.
Already a hugely popular tourist attraction, the bridge will also serve as a venue for
a runway for fashion shows.

From the 9th to the 14th centuries, the Cambodian Empire of Angkor covered most of
