IDENTIFICATION OF SICKNESS IN BIRDS
As a newcomer in the hobby of bird keeping i always wondered how experts
would find a bird's sickness whereas to me it would look perfectly normal. However, with
time and experience i did realize that birds do exhibit a few symptoms that owners
should be on the lookout for in order to have the best chance of saving their pets during
illness by detecting it in the early stage. Therefore, i thought i should share some
of the indications that sick birds might exhibit for the ease of new comers in the field of
aviculture. These indications include:-
Unusual Droppings
If the colour of your bird's droppings has turned yellow,
green, dark brown or chalkish white then u have to be
on guard as regards to bird’s health. Similarly watery /
running droppings or dropping containing undigested
food are indicators of a serious impending health
problem.
Fluffed Feathers
Birds that seem to be lazy and having fluffed feathers
for a prolonged duration are surely sick and require
immediate attention.
Inflamed Nostrils or Running Nose
Pay close attention to your bird's cere. If you observe
any redness, inflammation or discharge, there is a very
good chance that your pet would be seriously ill.

Cloudy or Watery Eyes
If you observe symptoms of cloudy eyes or a watery
discharge coming out of your birds’ eyes then it’s an
indication of eye infection for which they require
immediate medical attention else the poor bird can
lose its sight and in many cases life too.
Reduced Food Intake
Birds have very high metabolisms and spend considerable time in taking small quick
meal breaks. If u observe that your bird has lost its appetite or is losing weight it surely
is an indicator of a sick bird and such symptom should not be taken lightly by the owner.
Open Mouthed Breathing, Rapid Tail Movement or
Abnormal Noise during Breathing
Respiratory problems are among the most common
bird illnesses and shall be evident by the birds’
behaviour which could either be a rapid tail movement /
tail bobbing, breathing with open mouth (bird showing
symptoms of difficulty in breathing) or by the abnormal
heavy voice when the bird breathes. The respiratory
tract infections give less time to owners to respond and
hence should be attended at priority by the birdkeeper.
Dirty Feathers
Birds by nature are very inclined towards hygiene so you will often find them preening
each other and taking baths even during winters. If you find that the feather condition
around face, rump or vent area is dirty and sticky then surely your bird is in trouble.

Lifting of One Foot for Long Durations Along with Grinding of Beak
If you find that your bird is constantly lifting its one foot and attaching it with its stomach
along with regular grinding of upper and lower parts of beak then there is a likelihood
that the bird has worms in its stomach and thus you need to deworm it at priority.
The above mentioned were a few common indications which I feel that a bird
would exhibit during its illness, however, there might be other symptoms which I have
missed out / overlooked so inputs from experts are most welcome.
