This guide provides information on how to record in person or face
to face mystery shopping tasks (Page 2), as well as telephone
tasks (Page 3).
Recording In-Person Visits
It is important when you are recording an in-person visit that you do so as
covertly as possible to avoid arousing suspicion. Fortunately, modern
technology helps us out on this front! We recommend the following techniques:
Using your Smartphone:
- On your smartphone, you can use a voice recording app to record the interaction. If
you choose this route, ensure that your phone is positioned in a pocket with the mic
out so that the audio is captured as clearly as possible.
- iPhone/Apple Users – the Voice Recording app is available in your phone as a
standard
- Android Users – many devices have a Recorder app as standard; if not search the
app store for one that suits you.

Using your Smart Watch:
- Same rules apply, but it means that your phone isn’t needed. Added bonus is that the
audio recording captured will be more clear as it is not muffled by a pocket.
Tips for a great audio recording:

Start your recording before you enter the store or location. Where required for your
project, indicate the name of the location and date before you enter on the
recording.

Stop the recording only after you leave the store – hearing your waiting time can be
important to the client!

Be sure to listen back to your recording to ensure it is complete and that nothing
inappropriate was captured before you upload it to your questionnaire. You can also
use this to help you with responses in your questionnaire!
