We are conducting the study on behalf of Health Canada. The client is revealed in the introduction.
Purpose:
The purpose of the survey is to monitor changes in alcohol and drug use in Canada. This is referred to as
the Canadian Alcohol and Drugs Survey (CADS). Participants do not need to drink or do drugs in order
to participate, we are looking for the opinions of everyone.
Project Type:
CATI Recruit to web – we will not be offering a telephone version due to the sensitive nature of the
questions. The survey is available on the WCAG (screen reader accessible platform).
Where Are We Conducting Research?
The survey is being conducted in all 10 provinces of Canada. The territories are not being surveyed.
Outpulse and Inbound Information
We will use local outpulse numbers where available.
Who Are We Surveying?
Respondents must be 15 years of age or older.
Where Did We Get Their Info?
The majority of the sample will be randomly selected numbers. We will be adding some GPRS sample
flagged as youth while in field, but this will not be loaded for the first few weeks of calling.
When are we calling?
We are calling evenings and weekends, daytime callbacks when requested.
Incentive
We are ONLY offering an incentive to those who are 15 to 19 years old and the sample source is RDD
sample. This will be a very limited number of respondents. All other participants will NOT be provided
an incentive so please do not actively mention the incentive. The script will adjust to offer the incentive
only after we’ve collected the respondents age. This is the reason the script is slightly different than
normal.
Format of Survey:
This is a recruit to web but the script will be a bit longer than our typical recruits as there is some text
that is required to be read by the ethics board. We will also be confirming during the call that the
respondent has received the SMS message, so that we can actively monitor if we are getting blocked by
any specific providers.
Sample Profiles Available in Field Track:
There are sample profiles for Wireless and Landline. The script itself adjusts for the different incentive
text based on the age provided in the recruit. The intention is to load very little, if any landline sample, so
approximately 90-95% of numbers will be wireless.
Language
Survey is offered in both English and French.

Time:
The web survey length is up to 20 minutes depending on responses.
The survey will be open until December.
SMS messages are being sent directly within the survey – this will increase the recruit length a bit,
but we are finding it is increasing show up rate as well. Email will be sent within a few minutes.

Important to Remember:
Respondents do not need to use drugs or drink alcohol to participate, we need responses from
everyone.
We are offering SMS over email to try to limit the possibility of bounced emails given the large data
collection size.
When email is offered please use the tool to confirm email addresses phonetically.
The project will be in field for a long period of time, but if respondents ask please note that we would
appreciate if they would take the survey “within the next few days”.
