B.Review:
Evaluate the following exponential numbers. Tell if the answer is Check or Wrong
1. 5 ² = 25
2. 6 ³ = 18
3. 5 ³ = 125
4. 10³ = 1000
5. 7 ² = 49
C.Motivation ( Situation)
Agnes got sick and was absent from school for a week . The teacher sent her some
homeworks to work on. But she is hard up so she posts it in the facebook asking anyone to help
her solve the answer .
1. 3 x 2 + 6 ÷ 2 x 5
2. (5 + 6) x (8 x 2)
3. 5 + (5+2) – 3 + (8 ÷ 4)
4, 7 x 3 + (5-2) + 4 ²
Can you help her? Do you have an idea on how to solve the numerical sentences?
D. Presentation ( Discussion)
Together let us help Agnes solve the numerical expression.
How are the numbers different from the previuos numbers that we were solving?
There is a number enclosed in a parenthesis.
Three mathematical operations are involved
How do we solve it ?
Follow the GEMDAS rule ( Guide the children to solve the numerical expression)
E. Enlighten Me
Have the pupils watch the video clip on GEMDAS Rule
F. Let us compute more
1. 256 ÷ [ ( 4 + 2² ) x 4 ]=
2. ( 8 x 9 ²) - 2³ + 10 ÷ 2 =
3. 16 - 6² + 36 =
4. ( -3 )² - 12 + 2 =
5. 5 - 5 x 4 + 1 =
G. Lets do More ( Group Activity)
Setting of Standards
Group I- Solve for the answer)
1. 3 x ( 13 - 5 ) + 2 =
2. ( 8 x 2) - ( 9 - 2² ) =
3. 20 - 5 x 4 + 1=
4. 3 + 2 + 8 ÷ 4
5. 3 ² - 15 ÷ 5 + ( 6 + 4 )
Group II ( Modified True or False)
Evaluate the following number expression. Write TRUE if the answer is correct and if it is wrong
write the correct answer.
1. 10 - 4 = 9 ÷ 3 = 9
2. ( 8 + 2 ) - ( 9 - 2² ) = 6
3. 3 x 8 + 16 ÷ 4 = 28
4. 2 x 2 - 4÷ 2 + 4 = 12
5. 10 + 2 + 4 ÷ 4 ( 4 - 3 ) = 2
Group III
Read and analyze each item . Encircle the letter of the correct answer .
1. Order in which steps must be done to simplify an expression . This follows rules of each set of
operation
A. PEMDAS
B. GEMDAS
C. . Order of operation
2. 3 + 4 - 8 x 2 + ( 4 + 2 )=

( Presentation of Group Work)
G.Generalization
What have we learned today?
What are the rules to follow in solving numerical expressions incolving different operations?
GEMDAS Rule
Rule 1- Perform all the operations inside the grouping symbols ( parentheses and brackets) and all
operations below or above the the bivision bar.
Rule 2- Evaluate the numbers with exponenets
Rule 3- Perform multiplication and division as they occur from left to right.
Rule 4- Perform addition and subtraction as they occur from left to write.
H. Practice Exercice Towards Mastery
Joey and Joseph are working on their assignment . Thay are asked to solve this numerical
expression: 45 ÷ 3 x 2 + ( 10 + 11) . However they got different answers.
Joey’s Solution
Joseph’s Solution
45 ÷ 3 x 3 + ( 10 + 11)
= 15 x 3 + ( 10 + 11)
= 45 + ( 10 + 11)
= 45 + 21
= 66
45÷ 3 x 3 + ( 10 + 11)
= 45 ÷ 9 + ( 10 + 11)
= 5 + ( 10 + 11)
= 5 + 21
= 26
