Democracy vs. Dictatorship

Democracy Vs. Dictatorship
Dictatorship and democracy are 2 fundamentally opposite forms of government in our
world. Where democracy empowers the people of a state, dictatorship declares just the
ruler as the all-powerful. Dictatorship and democracy are both different ways of ruling a
state and both generate different effects on the citizens of the state whether it be their
opinions on the government or their standard of living.
Dictatorship originated from ancient Rome where one man, the magistrate had
extraordinary powers to deal with state crisis. On the other hand, democracy first
appeared in the Greek political and philosophical thought where citizens of the state
were given the power to choose a leader for themselves. Dictatorship strips the people
of all their powers and rights whereas democracy empowers them to elect and
disqualify their leaders. In a dictatorial state, the party and the citizens have no
authority over the dictator whereas the leader in a democratic state, the leader has to
answer to the party and to the public who voted for him. In a dictatorial state, the leader
has full control over every aspect of the state as well as the lives of the citizens. The
news to be published, the media content on TV and radio and the social and political
activities are all controlled by the dictator. On the contrary, in a democratic state, the
newspapers can publish their own opinions for or against the government and call out
any wrongdoings and the people are free to stand with any political party as well as
having the right to choose their own social activities. Democracy and dictatorship each
lies on the opposite ends of the spectrum.
People in a democratic state are observed to be more patriotic than people in a
dictatorial state. This may be related to the fact that in a democratic state, their loyalty
lies with their country whereas in a dictatorial state, they have no choice but to be loyal
to their dictator whether he is a good or bad ruler. People being ruled by a dictator feel
opressed and unheard as the only word that goes is the word of the leader. On the
other hand, people in a democratic state feel free and well looked-after. People living in
a democratic state have the freedom of thought and expression whereas in a dictatorial
state, all aspects of their lives are controlled completely by the dictator. A democratic
government aims to promote equality and enhance the dignity of an individual. On the
contrary, dictatorship declares the leader as the supreme authority and represses
individualism.
When it comes to development, historically, democratic states have progressed better
and faster than dictatorial states. Comparisons like the ones between America and
Azerbaijan or South Korea and North Korea are proof. In America, a democratic state,
people are provided with better wages, healthcare, life support and social security as
compared to people in Azerbaijan, a dictatorial state. The average life expectancy, living
costs, politicians stability, civil rights, unemployment rate, inflation rate and average
income in the US is far better than in Azerbaijan. Similarly in South Korea, the people are
happier and in better living conditions than in North Korea as the South has less power
crisis and poverty rate as compared to the North. As the economic conditions are better
in democratic states than in dictatorial states, the people have better lives in the former.
Democracy differs from dictatorship in every aspect of governing a state. Where the
former is more malleable, the latter is rigid and unchallengeable. Where democracy
produces a happy people and a well-developing peogressing or developed state,
dictatorship has proven to make its subjects oppressed and underdeveloped. All in all,
based on the factors discussed above, democracy is a better form of government than
dictatorship.
