Internet of Things (IoT)
F: Hey! Do you know the Internet of Things?
K: No! what is the Internet of Things?
The term IoT or Internet of Things, refers to the collective network of connected devices and the technology that facilitates
communication between devices and the cloud, as well as between devices themselves. Internet of things is a technology that allows
us to add a device to an inert object.
K: oh, so how does IoT work?
F: So, a typical IoT system works through the real-time collection and exchange of data. An IoT system has three components. These
are the Smart Devices, IoT Application, and A graphical user interface.
-
smart devices are those who collects data from its environment, user inputs, or usage patterns and communicates data
over the internet to and from its IoT Application.
K: So, devices like television, security camera, or exercise equipment that has been given computing capabilities are examples of
Smart Devices?
F: Yes! You’re right. So moving on to the second component, which is the IoT Application. The IoT Application is a collection of
services and software that integrates data received from various IoT devices. It uses machine learning or artificial Intelligence (AI)
technology to analyse this data and make informed decisions. These decisions are communicated back to the IoT device and the IoT
device then corresponds intelligently to inputs.
K: Ah, so activity trackers or stress detectors are examples of IoT Applications. But I have a Question, you know alexa right? (yes) so
is alexa an IoT application?
F: Yes, because Alexa functions with Artificial Intelligence or AI to answer your questions and to help you.
K: okay! Noted.
F: So let me tell you the last component of the IoT system which is the Graphical User Interface.
The IoT device or fleer of devices can be managed through a graphical user interface. Common examples include a mobile
application. Common examples include mobile application or what website that can be used to register and control smart devices.
Did u understand? (YES) now, can you give me some examples?
K: yes. So example is the windows. Some laptops use windows to function, also Android, Android is used in most smartphones for it
to function, and also the Apple’s ios, ios powers apple devices.
F: for you to fully understand what IoT is, I’ll give you some examples of IoT devices.
-
Connected cars
Connected homes
Wearables
Collaborative robotics
K: so how can IoT improve our lives?
F: The internet of things has a wide-ranging impact on human life and work. It allows machines to do more heave lifting, take over
tedious tasks and make life more healthy, productive, and comfortable.
K: ah, so internet of things can help us work smarter, live smarter, and gain complete control over our lives. Like for example.
Assuming we are in the year 3000 or earlier, connected devices could change your entire morning routine. When you hit the snooze
button, your alarm clock would automatically get the coffee machine to turn on and open your window blinds. Your refrigerator
wold auto-detect finishing groceries and order them for home delivery. Your smart oven would tell you the menu for the day. Your
smartwatch will schedule meetings as your connected car automatically sets the GPS to stop for a fuel refill. The opportunities are
endless in an IoT world!
