Can I use OPC with RSLinx Classic to get data from a Micro800 with CIP Serial, or Micro850 PLC over EtherNet/IP?
Environment
This article was developed using Micro850 firmware rev. 2.011 and CCW rel.
2.00.
The same applies to CCW rel. 3.00 and 4.00.
An upgraded RSLinx Classic license is required to use OPC, as CCW is bundled with RSLinx Classic Lite which
doesn’t support OPC.
RSLinx Classic Single Node allows communication with 1 device - your PC for example
RSLinx Classic OEM allows communication with multiple devices
RSLinx Classic Gateway allows remote OPC from multiple machines

This application note covers CIP Serial and CIP EtherNet for the range of Micro800 controllers when exchanging
data via OPC.
Note: This tech note is not valid for firmware 6.011 or newer. Please note from firmware revision 7.xx and
onwards the method has changed. Refer to OPC Data Access with Micro800 PLCs Firmware 7.xx or newer.
CIP Serial
Connect your PC and the Micro830/850 controller with the 1761-CBL-PM02, ser. C serial cable.
Enable the embedded serial port to use CIP Serial protocol (default settings work fine).
CIP Serial capability is:
Micro810: no connectivity
Micro830: USB, CIP Serial (through embedded serial port)
Micro850: USB, CIP Serial (through embedded serial port) and EtherNet/IP
Configure RSLinx Classic DF1 driver - selecting the right Comm Port and Device type should allow the AutoConfigure to do the rest.

As the USB driver is configured automatically every time the cable is plugged in on both sides there is no need to
perform any additional configuration.
CIP EtherNet
This application note details how to setup RSLinx Classic with an OPC Data Access with a Micro850 PLC (global
variables only) over EtherNet/IP. Please keep in mind that the capabilities of OPC Data Access with RSLinx
Classic to a Micro850 over EtherNet/IP is limited.
Note: It is assumed that the user is familiar with CCW programming software, as many of the steps for setup are
not shown.
The Micro850 cannot initiate EtherNet/IP MSGs at CCW release 2.0. Later releases will support this. In order to
communicate with a Micro850 over EtherNet/IP it is necessary to set up the Micro850 with an IP address. In the
following screenshot, the Micro850 is set to 192.168.1.3 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

To test the OPC capability, first we need to set up some test variables in the Micro850.
As OPC can transfer the base data types of BOOL, SINT, INT, DINT, REAL, the following global variables have been
created:
M850_BOOL, M850_INT, M850_DINT, M850_REAL.
A simple timer / counter program increments the values when the Micro850 runs.
Important: Only Global Variables can be transferred via CIP from all Micro800 controllers.

Now build, download, and go to Debug mode so that you can see the Global Variables.
Go to the RSLinx Classic software and select DDE/OPC-->Topic Configuration...
Select our Micro850 at 192.168.1.3 and click the New button to create a new topic.

Change the topic name to something meaningful, in this case [M850].
Click on the Data Collection tab, and set the Processor Type to Logix5000.
Click the Done button and Yes to update the topic.

In order to see our OPC data, we will use the OPC Test Client which is installed as part of RSLinx Tools.
Launch it from Start-->All Programs-->Rockwell Software-->RSLinx-->Tools-->OPC Test Client.
In the OPC Test Client window, click on the Server tab and select Connect.
Select RSLinx OPC Server and click OK.

Click on Group-->Add Group... then enter a Group Name, in this example we will use MyTest and click OK.
Next Click on Item-->Add Item... then enter an Item Name consisting of the Topic name in square brackets,
followed by the Micro850 User Global Variable name (must be of data type BOOL, SINT, INT, DINT, or REAL) or I/O
Variable name and click OK. In this case we will add [M850]M850_INT.

In this example we will add the rest of our variables in turn by clicking the Add Item button.
Verify the variables have Sub Quality as ’Good’ as shown below in the OPC Test Client:
Compare them to the values in the Micro850 in Debug mode:
