1. List down at least 3 solid waste pollution problems in your current residence place.
• Improper waste disposal is an integral aspect of solid waste pollution, as it often
stems from people failing to discard their garbage correctly. In our city, solid wastes
are typically directed to the landfill, which serves as a dumpsite, consequently
resulting in pollution in its surrounding vicinity.
• Plastic pollution: even if Lapu-Lapu is currently implementing the ban of using
plastic for two days in a week (Wednesday and Saturday) it still does solve the
problem of plastic waste in the city. This stems from the use of single use plastic
by stores since these kinds of plastic are one of the main causes of solid waste
pollution.
• Lack of Public Discipline: Even if there are a pair of trashcans in an area people
just show the lack of discipline to take time and find those bins for them to throw
their trashes. Instead, they would just throw it to some curb they find or just throw
where they see people are throwing their trashes also.
2. Provide mitigating measures for your answers in question 1.
• Establish recycling facilities: Invest in recycling facilities to process recyclable
materials and reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.
• Promote reusable products: Encourage the use of reusable bags, bottles, and
containers through awareness campaigns and incentives for businesses and
consumers.
• Enforce littering regulations: Implement stricter enforcement of anti-littering laws
and impose fines for those caught littering or not using designated waste bins.
3. As a student, how will you reduce the solid waste problem in our environment.
• One way of reducing solid waste in our environment is by participating in volunteer
campaigns that addresses the pollution in our community for example coastal
cleanups or road cleanups since these are where solid wastes are prominent. There
are also campaigns in the public market and the different polluted areas in the city.
This type of activities also builds camaraderie among you and other individuals that
take an interest in caring for the environment.
