Production Methods
The physical and chemical properties, non-destructive testing methods and other relevant issues of
modified 4340 steel material required to be produced are given below.
1. The production method of electric arc furnace, ladle furnace, vacuum degassing and electro
slag re-melting methods shall be used respectively in the manufacturing of steel ingots.
2. Steel billets will be fully killed by the addition of Aluminum.
3. The tonnages and dimensions of the crucibles to be cast will be determined by the manufacturer,
taking into account the requested ingot sizes with a minimum forging ratio of 3.

5. Hardenability testing of forged steels will be conducted in accordance with ASTM A255 standard
and will be min. 52 HRC at J12/16 in., J20/16 in. and J32/16 in. The austenitizing temperature
to be used the Jominy End Quench Test will be 840 ± 5 °C.
3.5.
Non-Destructive Testing
All of the forged steel pieces will be ultrasonically inspected in accordance with EN-10228-3 standard
to detect internal defects. Steel billets that forged to Ø 200 ± 5 mm shall be scanned at an angle of 180°
and evaluated according to the Class 4 of EN 10228-3 standard.
