Dear Family,
This week we’ll begin by asking, “Why is it
important to take care of our environment?”
In the humorous fiction selection Judy
Moody Saves the World, we’ll read about a

very seriously, to her family’s surprise. We’ll
also read My Smelly Pet, another humorous

Talk with your child about different kinds of pollution you might encounter during a
typical day. Use as many Target Vocabulary words as you can in your conversation.
Home Improvement
Walk through your home with your child. Discuss how your family can save and recycle
resources. For example, turn off the water when brushing your teeth.
What’s the Problem?
Ask your child to identify a way to improve the environment in your community. Then
have your child describe the problem and propose a solution in a letter to a local official.

Mom knew she could trust Ralph to take the bag of empty bottles to
the recycling center. She had selected him for the job because he was very
responsible and always did everything he was supposed to do. She had
picked him for important jobs before, and he had never disappointed her.
He completed each job well and never left anything for her to finish for him.
When the recycling center called to tell her that they had received all of the
bottles, she was glad that, once again, Ralph had done a great job.

Norberto: Are you going to put that carton in the
garbage?
Mijo: Yes. I used it to carry my project to school. It’s
rubbish. I don’t need it anymore.
Norberto: Why don’t you recycle it or reuse it?
Mijo: I guess I could keep it for my next project.
Norberto: Or somebody else could use it. That way, it
won’t cause pollution and hurt the environment.
Mijo: Good idea. Are you going to throw away the
rest of that sandwich?
Norberto: Yes, but I guess I should put it in the
compost pile instead.
Mijo: Or you could recycle it in my stomach!

Grade 3, Unit 4
Judy Moody and her class talked
about the environment. Their teacher
said there are many ways to save the
planet. Just one person can make a
difference.
Judy Moody wanted to save the
world. She started with banana peels.
She put them in a bucket. She wanted
to use them for compost. Compost is
turning garbage into dirt.
Judy looked around her house.
She found things that came from the
rain forest. She found chocolate,
rubber, and gum. She found a carton
of dripping ice cream. Judy put them
on the kitchen table.
Judy’s family did not understand.
They did not want to throw away all
those things. Judy had another plan.
Judy looked for rubbish in the
garbage can. There were lots of things
they could recycle. There were
eggshells and coffee grounds. Those
things would make good compost, too.
Judy Moody Saves the World
Judy saved her old art project
from the trash. Then she got out her
old lunch box. She could reuse the
box instead of using paper bags to
carry her lunch.
Paper bags come from trees.
Judy told her family that trees give
shade and help take dust out of the
air. They help control global warming
and pollution.
Judy wanted everyone to stop
hurting the planet. Yet, she could
hardly get her family to listen to her.
This was more complicated than she
had planned. How would she ever
save the world?

Mom knew she could trust Ralph to take the bag of empty bottles to
the recycling center. She had selected him for the job because he was very
responsible and always did everything he was supposed to do. She had
picked him for important jobs before, and he had never disappointed her.
He completed each job well and never left anything for her to finish for him.
When the recycling center called to tell her that they had received all of the
bottles, she was glad that, once again, Ralph had done a great job.
