Avena BSIT-2104 Denotation and Connotation is a part of our life to communicate to others that’s why we have to learn how these two types of word that will help us to understand what we want to explain or convey to others. Denotation is a specific, exact, and concrete meaning of a word.It is a literal definition or objective.It is also a definition you will find in the dictionary that contains no emotion means it is a straightforward concept. Additionally, every word also carries a denotation because it has a dictionary definition, regardless of the language or aspect of speech. While the Connotation is an idea or feeling that words invoke in addition to their literal or primary meaning.For example, the word “warm” Denotation meaning is “ a moderate degree of heat “ because we all know that warm is a word that tells the feel of our body in a literal way. For example in a sentence “My coat can keep my body warm during this winter.”. While the word “warm” in Connotation is “showing affection or kindness” that tell us the emotion or feelings of somebody. For example in a sentence “ Her warm smile is making me feel better.” means the expression on her face when she smile is so lovely that makes me feel better .Sometimes connotations has social-cultural implications. It can be positive or negative. For example, a word “selective” and “ picky”, word selective is positive and involves the selection of the most suitable or best qualified, while the word picky is negative which is very careful or too careful about choosing or accepting things, these two has almost the same meaning but differrent appreciation of person who uses it because it may vary based on a person's background, environment, or time period. Direct and Indirect Presentation refer to the ways of revealing a character’s personality,traits, or motives.Direct presentation involves telling the reader directly what the character is like in another word the reader is “told” by narrator some detail about the character.For example, “He was oldest man in the village.”,while indirect presentation is “shown” by the narrator some detail about the character’s actions, speech, thoughts, or appearance, and through the way other characters react to him.For example; (speech) Ex: ”I am too old”, he said. (thoughts) Ex: “I will never be like him”, he thought to himself. (actions) Ex: Dale walked up to the girl,knocked the burger from his hands, and stomped on it. (appearance/looks) Ex:Her cheeks went red and she smiled,looking at my eyes instead of her phone.
