PHY 1520 Challenging Problem
Two charged plates stand vertical and face each other. The magnitude of the surface
charge density on each plate doesn’t change and has a value of 3.2 ⇥ 10 7 C/m2 , and
the plates are 2.1 cm apart. (a) If a proton is released from rest near the positively
charged plate, with what speed will it hit the negatively charged plate? (b) If we
drill a hole in the negative plate and the proton comes out through that hole and
encounters a 3 T magnetic field that is perpendicular to the velocity of the proton,
find the magnetic field generated by the proton.
